I have thought since he first ran that George W. Bush was too light to be governor of Texas. Frankly, I can't imagine why anyone would consider him for president. He's not smart, he doesn't know much, and he doesn't work hard.
The truth is, he is not terribly interested in government or how it works. Damned if I know why he's running. He is a nice fellow. I've always liked him. I like lots of people who I don't think should be president.

2. You might want to change your headline to read: |
|
"Liar, liar BY Molly Ivins ... otherwise it looks like she's being called a liar.

6. Molly Ivins knew early on that Dubya wasn't public service material. |
|
She was right on early and she's been dead-on ever since.

7. At the time of the elections, I spoke with a co-worker who was from Texas |
|
He was a good friend of mine, and we talked politics, among other things.
He was no fan of George Bush.
First, he pointed out that the governorship of Texas is a highly emasculated position - Texans like their control local - and if I'm not mistaken, the legislature meets only every two years (or some odd thing like that). The governor is severely restricted on what he has direct control over.
He also noted that Bush instituted certain programs that, although they sounded good on the surface, were unfunded or otherwise flawed, and nearly bankrupted the state - of course, Bush was out of office by the time the bills came due. Sound familiar?
Basically I got the impression the governorship was a largely ceremonial position - not without actual responsibilities, mind you, but if you wanted to set someone up for a run for President, and wanted to give him a governorship, and that person was a lightweight, the state of choice would be Texas, where he could do the least damage (although Bush still did considerable damage there, apparently) and have the least responsibilities.
