I was just contacted by a representative of Michael Moore
Edited on Fri Mar-31-06 09:59 PM by DS1
After they put out the call for stories of Health Insurance problems in America for the new "Sicko" film, I'd emailed him about Andy Stephenson and all the fiasco around him and Johns Hopkins and all that payment upfront. They want to know more.

It'll be an interesting weekend.

Paste your informational links here please.

Edited on Fri Mar-31-06 11:36 PM by DS1
and saw two to him, they weren't much, but I was making peanuts and it was what I could do.

If I was making now what I was making then, I'd have sent 10 times as much over, but I wasn't, and was scraping by as it was.

You worked so hard. I only saw it from my on-line vantage point, but in the face of a lot of really ugly crap from the Freepers, you (and several other DUers) put all of your energies into helping Andy.

I never knew him, but I fell in love with his sweet smile and my heart went out to him.

You are a hero for what you did... :)

Because of his work caring for Andy as you did with the effort you put in, was like caring for us all. We all do what we can in our own way but you put a lot into the fundraising so thanks again. It's beautiful what was accomplished for so many reasons. And I am so glad that Michael Moore has learned about it. It's a story that says so much perhaps more will learn too.

In his last days, when he was very sick, Andy specifically asked us to carry on the fight for public healthcare. He knew he would not be here to help, but insisted on our promise to keep fighting for it. I think he would be most pleased to do his part for MM's project.

52. oh you would not believe the crap I put up with

The fake 'bills' I've gotten, only a month after I came to an agreement about a payment plan with the hospital. Some phony is still threatening me about my balance etc., even though the hospital deducted the agreed-upon fifty bucks this month!

It often sounds like one hand doesn't know what the other is doing, or maybe it's just sabotage.

Then there were the people at my workplace who wanted our blood and called it a 'health screening' but who contracted a third party who provided no credentials whatsoever and who asked for our social security numbers and home addresses. I have seen more crap in the past year....I mean, I got a harassing phone call just before I was to leave on vacation, asking me where I was and saying I had to forward the payment that day.

110. I'd cry like a baby, too.
I didn't know Andy as well as some of you, but his death (and the disgusting things the freepers did) affected me very strongly. I couldn't stop crying for days. Even weeks after he died, I'd find myself tearing up. If I think about it now, my eyes water.

Michael Moore, if you're reading this thread (you never know, folks ), please tell Andy's story. He'd approve. He wanted us to fight for two things: Voter Verified Paper Ballots and Health Care for Everyone. He kept repeating those two points. He didn't want us to forget. His story in your documentary would go a long way toward furthering his legacy.

76. It was taken early 2005, I believe
He was somewhere away from home (teaching elctions issues, as usual! I think). It was taken at what looked like an outdoor cafe with some other activists/DUers (Faye??). I had cropped out the background, because his pic was so cute. I don't think I have the original uncropped anymore. Maybe someone around here will recognise it and remember.

And, then, there was the recount. No time off. I bet Andy didn't even have time to assess how he felt until when? Late January? February? I don't have the dates in hand. I remember him posting about evidence he was finding in Ohio.

83. Andy was one of the most amazing people I've ever met.
Even though he was mortally ill, right up to the last couple of weeks of his life, he'd call me and tell me stories or jokes or sing to me.

He had a sense of humor that was just global. I mean, it should have been taxed as real estate.

85. Right before Andy got really sick, someone posted he needed a job
I offered andy a job at my law firm 25 miles away or so.

Andy was very appreciative.

Then it only got better when i explained that his job was to scan in results slips for Sequioa AVC Edge touch screen voting machines down at the local Auditor's office.

Andy had some history with Auditor "Sideshow" Bob Terwilliger (yes, the real name but not the real nickname). He handled that with aplomb and did good work.

Andy was not able to make it into work the next day, or any time thereafter, though I'm sure he loved the work.

Being a small one lawyer firm, we don't have health insurance even for ourselves. Otherwise, I'm sure Andy could have done election consulting from his hospital bed, if necessary.

I wrote this tribute to Andy, referring to the health insurance and the circumstances of his persecution, especially the part that continued even after he passed away.
http://washblog.typepad.com/main/2005/07/election_hero_a.html

THere are a few comments at the end of this piece. A certain freeper finds his way to the washblog to read and contest my piece. Though still filled with vitriol, you can see he's at least partially disarmed by what he read there. But a local washblogger had enough and took him to task.

93. Here's the Flash Film I created to honor Andy
Edited on Sat Apr-01-06 09:07 AM by symbolman
http://web.takebackthemedia.com/geeklog/public_html/staticpages/index.php?page=20050710095608538

It was mentioned in one of the articles in the Seattle paper http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2002382738_danny15.html I clicked on the link at the Paper and it took me to the fund raising of my film "Rove's War" at Takebackthemedia.com, so I dug into the site to get just the actual link to The Memorial Flash for Andy.

Hope this helps, say hi to Michael Moore from the guy who did the ARMY OF ONE 30 second film for the MoveOn "Bush In 30 Seconds" contest, he actually announced my name at the event as one of the 14 finalists in NYC and I got to stand up under some spotlights, the coolest feeling in the world, he might remember me, we did talk a few times (Not trying to horn in here with Michael, just bringing it up in case he wants to know who did the Memorial should they be interested in using it at all, didn't want to send folks to the wrong link when it's about Andy and Honoring Him..)

Andy loved my "VoteRevolution" Flash work so much that he kept it up on his site for the rest of his days, it made me very proud to be part of the program, HIS work, not "she who shall not be mentioned" :)

Hope Moore CRUSHES those creeps who attacked Andy, that would be HUGELY JUST.

Good Job!
