I have a question or two.

Where do you get the photos?

I like your graphics. What typeface is that, Goudy? There's a spot or two where you might try kerning, even if the letters intersect. I'm not sure it would work visually though.

Again, those are terrific and so unfortunately sad.

I know that the death toll on IraqBodyCount is the most conservative available. Molly Ivins commented in a recent column that she uses these numbers 'because she doesn't want to be accused of distortion' (paraphrasing). I understand her urge, but I strongly disagree. At some point one has to be willing to stand up and tell the truth even if you know that you may be called a 'name' - like 'distorter' or 'liar'.

The IraqBodyCount.org standard is much too high for a war-torn country -- their sources are limited to public domain newsgathering agencies with web access. Thousands of people who die are not going to have their deaths reported in a newspaper -- the papers can't cover all the deaths, it is much too chaotic.

You could show both the 37,000+ and the Lancet (2004) estimate of 100,000 (which does not include Fallujah and all deaths since the data was collected for the article - details in the grey box below).

My point: We've not learned the lessons of Viet Nam -- the number of Vietnamese dead that is commonly accepted is around 300,000. The true numbers came out in the years after the war, but hardly any of the 'history books' revised the numbers that were originally believed -- the true numbers of all Indochinese who died is 3-4 million.

In Iraq, over the past 15 years (Persian Gulf War and its aftermath, economic sanctions, and Iraq War) over 1,000,000 Iraqis have died (details below the grey box).

I believe we need to stare long and hard at the 'real numbers' now before - God save our souls - we reach the numbers who died in Viet Nam.

IRAQ WAR: March 2003 - March 2006: 250,000

A Johns Hopkins University study published in the British medical journal The Lancet in October, 2004: The Lancet estimate (usually approximated to 100,000 deaths) includes Iraqi civilians and insurgents, and includes all causes of death, whether violent or nonviolent, and whether they were caused by foreigners (such as US pilots) or by Iraqis themselves. (1)

The figure of 100,000 had been based on somewhat "conservative assumptions", notes Les Roberts at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, U.S., who led the study. That estimate excludes Falluja, a hotspot for violence. If the data from this town is included, the compiled studies point to about 250,000 excess deaths since the outbreak of the U.S.-led war. (2)

Eman Ahmad Khamas is a human rights advocate who has documented abuses by the U.S. military in Iraq.... She said: "This occupation has destroyed Iraq. Americans don't know that tens of thousands of Iraqis are in prisons. Americans don't know how many have been killed. Lancet reported 100,000 in 2004, not counting Falluja. Now it is something like double this number. Hundreds of thousands of families must search for men who are missing, and they are left with nothing to support themselves. Many people do not know about the bombing of cities. Bush said the war ended on May 1, 2003. That's not true. Many Iraqi cities have been bombed severely. And families are buried in the rubble. Get the troops back home' is not enough. Yes, the occupation has to end immediately, but those responsible for these crimes have to be held responsible." (3)

The conclusion of 3 Years urges us to demand the "impeachment of the liar who got us (into Iraq)." That should be plural. Bush, Cheney, and three of the four top cabinet officers warrant impeachment for war crimes or crimes against humanity, while they and many of their aides deserve to be tried for their crimes.
