McKinney's statement
I've seen several posts on DU saying McKinney's Congressional ID was not excepted. According to McKinney's statement this is not true.

http://www.wsbtv.com/news/8361195/detail.html

This morning at approximately 8:57 am, I was going to a Budget Committee meeting due to start at 9:00 am. I was rushing to my meeting when a white police officer yelled to me. He approached me, bodyblocked me, physically touching me. I used my arm to get him off of me. I told him not to touch me several times. He asked for my ID and I showed it to him. He then let me go and I proceeded to my meeting and I assume that the Police Officer resumed his duties.

3. Yes, the right has embellished on the truth.
The RW hoard is trying to say she's claiming the policeman refused to accept her ID because her hairstyle was different than in the ID. McKinney never said that and I wanted to set the record straight.

89. You're completely right, Xultar - and not only blacks.
I've seen such disrespect here for Alaska Natives in both federal and state court. It's disgusting. This was PRE-911 and I could waltz into the courthouse, thru the metal detector and never get a second look. Half the time, because of the metal in my suit pockets, the thing would go off. They'd wave me through without a single check.. At that time, I was working for some attorneys - white chick, in my mid-40s.

Listen to other-than-white? There were exactly 3 guards I could find that were respectful to everyone. The rest? If it hadn't been so awful to see, it would have been funny; I'd expect to see this kind of behavior in some over-the-top Eddie Murphy movie.

55. Do you walk through a security checkpoint at work?
Where I work if I walked through a security checkpoint without my ID I would expect to hear someone yelling for me to stop, followed by the guard physically trying to stop me if I didn't.

We need to see the security tape to determine if he used excessive force. As I've said in all my other posts, I dont think she helped the situation by going through a checkpoint without the proper ID, or making sure someone cleared her through. Better to be safe than sorry.

As said before, I will reserve judgement on if excessive force was used until the video comes out (if it ever does). Otherwise its her word against his.

What if you dropped something, and a person came up behind you and touched you to get you to stop? Would you sock them in the face?

110. What I want to know is why they didn't shoot her
If they thought she had breached security and posed a great threat then why didn't they shoot her? If she had breeched security the last thing that they would want to do is to go up and grab her-- if she were a terrorist she could set off her bomb. So, to me it is obvious that this police officer knew exactly who she was and was antagonizing her because I guess that's how he gets his kicks. This whole thing just pisses me off to no end.

81. I read it.
"It is true that I have changed my hairstyle. It is true that at the time I was not wearing my pin. But many Members of Congress aren't wearing their pins today. Just in the last hour at least 8 Members of Congress have been spotted speaking from the well of the House without their pins and even more have been seen on the Hill today not wearing their Congressional pin."

Her words. Her statement.

Political Grandstanding in it's purest form.

If she had been an imposter, and blew up the Capitol building, we'd be accusing the Capitol Police of being rethugs who wanted to keep the mid-term elections from taking place.

I'm tired of this kind of stuff.

88. Do you have a link to that please? She showed him her ID, he then let
let her pass with no further incident ~ clearly he was incompetent. His job is to recognize AND PROTECT members of Congress. How can he protect them if he isn't even competent enough to RECOGNIZE them?

YOU'RE tired of this kind of stuff?? Well, that's unfortunate. I'M tired of hearing about Democrats being anthraxed, who are not important enough that the very police hired to protect them don't even know who they are. However, I'm not so self absorbed as to think anyone gives a rat's ass whether I'M tired or not!

What if while he was hassling a member of Congress who, his requirement says, he should have known, a terrorist had come along and blew up the whole place?? What we would be saying then?

The man failed to do his job. It's that simple. He should be fired. She should sue the police and maybe they'll start hiring competent people to protect members of Congress from now on, instead of hassling them.

93. No where in that statement
Does it say other members of congress passed through a checkpoint without displaying the pin.

When you walk into a bar and the bouncer asks for ID, do you just keep walking? I don't know what kind of fantasy world you all are living in, but she started this whole fiasco by not following the required procedure. And no I don't believe its required that every cop on duty must memorize every authorized congressperson that can bypass the checkpoint.

Even if they "get to know and recognize" certain members, I dont think thats a good thing. You shouldn't be allowed through on your reputation only. Thats a severe security lapse. In fact, I find this whole "bypass with ID" thing very insecure. They should have a seperate line for authorized members, who can use their ID/badge to go through either a turnstyle or gate. That way it is not up to the guard to memorize everyones face.

107. Oh, horseshit!
This kind of draconian "security" really works, don't it???

Murrah Building, e.g.

And the countless reports of someone in the last 3 years purposely simulating leaving possible explosives on three different airlines and then alerting the FBI what they had done -- as a lesson.

And 4 fucking jumbo jetliners disappear withing an hour of each other and no one knows a thing and AFTER ALL THAT SUPPOSED SECURITY!!

And meanwhile 82 year old granny gets the big frisk because she might have a metal plate in her hip that she told them about several fucking times!!!!

Please pardon my language, but we accept the security gates as "that which should be" and argue from that point forward. We need to get rid of those secuirty gates.

Flame away, me hearties!!

98. Maybe you should re-read the statement
Because it says it quite clearly:

"Unfortunately, the Police Officer did not recognize me as a Member of Congress and a confrontation ensued. I did not have on my Congressional pin but showed the Police Officer my Congressional ID."

She showed her ID after she was confronted.

However, it is these statements which make me wonder WTF shes thinking:

"It is true that I have changed my hairstyle. It is true that at the time I was not wearing my pin. But many Members of Congress aren't wearing their pins today. Just in the last hour at least 8 Members of Congress have been spotted speaking from the well of the House without their pins and even more have been seen on the Hill today not wearing their Congressional pin. How many of them were stopped by Capitol Hill Police?"

You know what, I bet everyone who was speeding on the beltway and got pulled over said the same thing. Everyone else was speeding, how come they didnt get pulled over? If she had been wearing the proper ID and this still happened, I'd be 100% on her side. However she did not, and then in her statements dismisses the fact she wasn't wearing it. This guy probably could have handled the situation better, but she could also own up to the fact she is partly to blame.

I guess all someone has to do is dress up like a congressperson and waltz right into the capitol according to some of you. How dare they stop and question someone.

If I'm a Senator with a beard, and I shave my beard, he's SUPPOSED TO RECOGNIZE ME?

That, my friend, is the absolute stupidest notion I've ever heard.

Since everyone is source happy, would you have a link proving what is, and what isn't in his job description? And whether or not it's limited to MEMBERS OF CONGRESS and doesn't extend to those other people who enter and exit; like cabinet members?

8. The media is lying... unless you think "used my arm" = "slap"
The story linked above -- which seems typical of what I am reading -- is not reporting the story as McKinney said it happened and until they see the videotape and show it to us -- they should be reporting what she said - especially in a story that is reporting on her statement! :grr:

WSBTV story: "In that statement she expresses regret for slapping a police officer who stopped her at a security check point."

McKinney's statement: "I was rushing to my meeting when a white police officer yelled to me. He approached me, bodyblocked me, physically touching me. I used my arm to get him off of me."

:grr:

plant the "image" in peoples memories that McKinney is a "violent person", and then let it go. The point is that millions of people now think that she "punched" and officer. It's total bullshit. If that officer doesn't want to get "touched", then maybe he shouldn't "touch" others first!

Not to mention, the U.S. Captiol Police announced that they will NEVER release the video tape of the "incident". Gee, I wonder why that is!?

Most of the people here have NO CLUE what she has done in the areas of 9/11 truth, questioning the Pentagon why there is $2.3 trillion simply missing (Pentagon admits it), questioning why DynCorp still gets government contracts after they were caught (so was KB&R) doing human trafficking...etc.

Why is it significant to her that it was a white police officer? That's an issue right there. And second, she admits she did not have her ID on.

With all that said, she says she "Used my arm to get him off me." That could mean a number of different things.

Where she was doing everything in her power to calm the situation BY NOT COMMENTING. By walking into work at the Longhorn Building with 3 staffers, holding hands, being bombarded by reporters and cameras. You know, SILENTLY GOING TO WORK.

And that video of the capitol police leaving her office with her escorting them out the door - ALL OF THEM SMILING. That was Channel 11.

Is McKinney the only Rep that isn't always recognized?

My sister didn't immediately recognize me this morning (at a dental office) because I was dressed differently than I usually do (I wore "sweats" which is not expected of me).

26. Exactly!
While I think the media is blowing this out of proportion and it really isnt a story.. She isn't helping things. Just because she is late for a meeting doesnt mean everyone should get out of her way. She bypassed the security checkpoint (which she is allowed to do) but failed to show identification. It sounds like the security guard was correct in following her and asking for ID. It sounds like he was too forceful in his tactics. I am not siding with him but I believe BOTH parties have some blame in this incident.

Would it have been so hard for her to say "I was late, rushing, and forgot to show ID. I'm sorry"? I mean, sometimes you just have to pick and choose your battles.

I go through security checkpoints everyday at work, and since its so routine you usually dont think about it. But I always make sure my ID badge is visable and that the guard sees it. Frankly, I'm a little surprised there is a way for members of congress to bypass a security checkpoint so easily. I would think there should be a turnstyle or gate that is badge activated.

45. Why was she body blocked? Why do Americans accept their police
Edited on Sat Apr-01-06 07:10 PM by Catrina
abusing them like this as though it were okay? He should have asked her for her ID since she had done nothing up to that point to justify being 'body blocked' and she would have shown it to him. That's how it's done in most places, even here.

If there is video that shows him abusing her the way she describes simply to get an ID, then the cop is the one who is in trouble, imo. I am really disturbed by the acceptance of such treatment of ANY US citizen by the police. They need to respect the people who they are supposed to be serving. It's interesting that the woman is the one being judged here and she is not allowed to 'touch' this person, even to move his body away from hers, but he may touch her??? Why? Being a cop does not give him any special right to be abusive.

We have different ideas of what a democracy looks like ~ if the police expect respect, they must also behave properly. Most people are NOT criminals and will cooperate, as she did, if asked politely to do so. If that account is true, I can see why it's taking them so long to file charges.

The fact is, McKinney was asked to stop, she kept going, there was a MINOR confrontation and now all sides are trying to use it for their own ends.

She said the cop bodyblocked her (nothing about abuse)- you are all over DU claiming the cop groped her privates and/or assaulted her and/or abused her.

Obviously the RW whackjobs aren't the only ones eager to blow this all up out of proportion. IMHO dealing with the actual facts is probably a wiser idea - but to each his/her own.

If she had really "assaulted" the officer, don't you think she would have been detained?

Don't forget either that the U.S. Capitol Police announced that they will NEVER release the video tape of the incident.

It's obvious that they NEVER had plans to "Press Charges" - they just wanted to put their version of events out into the media world that she "PUNCHED" the officer - and then just let the story go. That way, even though McKinney only "touched" the officer's arm to make him let her go, they can say she "punched" him. Guilt by accusation - ZERO proof - only hearsay.

The end result? Now good Dems like yourself are questioning her "violent" tendencies. Their plan worked.

Clearly she broke the law. You cannot resist a cop if they try to detain you.
By her own words, he did not grab her from behind, he body blocked her. I really hope people know what a body block is. He interposed himself in front of her bodily, detaining her.
She then admits to shoving him.

Minor? Yep, totally minor and not worthy of arrest.
Technically illegal ? Yes.
Could they arrest her? Yes, there is enough evidence for arrest.
Will they arrest her? Again, I seriously doubt it.

However, that doesn't excuse not recognizing one of the high-ranking professionals he works for.

This would not pass muster at my County's administrative building.

And not just this guard, but others. And not all the guards, but only the white ones.

Again, this would not pass muster in my County, which is the government entity I'm most familiar with.

And for some reason, it doesn't seem to happen to the white Members of Congress -- and there are hundreds of them, so many more faces to memorize than the mere 14 women in the Congressional Black Caucus.

It's a puzzlement.

It really is.

I'm no expert on capitol hill security, but it sounds like this pin + your ID is enough to go through the "bypass" line. However, it doesnt seem like it is required that it be worn at all times while inside the security zone.

We are lacking any true facts about how often members of congress bypass the security checkpoint without wearing the pin.

Lets take a out of the ordinary case. A person just got elected as their districts rep. By your logic, every officer should memorized their phyiscal description. When said new rep walks through a security checkpoint WITHOUT the required identification clearly visible, they shouldn't be questioned at all.

I'd call that a lapse in security. In fact, I'd call any system designed around soley physically identifying authorized personel flawed. Sure the pin could be forged, but it adds another layer of security. Fact is she didnt display it, this cop saw that and went to verify her identity.

If he used excessive force to do so, then hes at fault. But I dont think the fact that he stopped her was a problem. Just because she was late is no excuse to not stop when asked. Nor is talking on a cell phone an excuse either.

Thank you for your input.

Oh, and btw, if the guards are civil service employees, much about their worklife is public record: pay grades and job descriptions included. (I used to work in a UC personnel office; later I worked for the County -- both public institutions.) So if you want to continue this exercise, go look it up yourself because I'm getting bored.

99. No, i'm not trying to excuse the MSM
In fact, if you read all my postings, I stated I think this has been blown out of proportion. It appears a simple misunderstanding, and if her and this cop would just apologize to each other it'd be done with. But then we get reports from the police that she "slapped" him, and she issues press releases stating he should have known better and that its crazy to expect a member of congress to follow the rules and show the required identification while passing through a security checkpoint.

I just don't buy the excuse that he should have visually known she was who she was and not asked for identification. Most of the time where I work the same guards are at my checkpoint, however every now and then there is someone different. Maybe a reserve officer? Maybe someone called in sick? Maybe he was new on the job? Maybe hes a racist bastard? The truth is, we don't know.

I just found it wierd that her statement singled him out as a "white" officer and that she was late for a meeting and he "should have known who i was".

101. If you go to her website, whihc I did, to send her a letter of support,
you will see a clip from a film where she is going in to the capitol, a black policeman salutes her and says "god bless you", then a white policeman comes running out to check who she is. When the reporter says to the guard "congresswoman", the guard apologizes profusely. He should have known who she was. She is sweet about it and remarks that this happens all the time. So there is a history of the police questioning her entrance to the congress. That has got to be angering and humiliating. She is a congresswoman for goodness sakes! In other words, there have been racist fuck-ups going on for a long time. She dealt with it gracefully. This week the cop grabbed her. She probably could have filed charges, but she is busy trying to protect this country!

109. It does seem that such a simple incident has been blown WAY out of propor
-tion. Why are we even discussing this here?

Oops, guess this ought to be my last post on this topic :D
