Wealthy School Apologizes For 'Food Stamps' Chant

MIDDLETON, Wis. -- Officials at a Wisconsin high school are apologizing for insults chanted at a basketball game.

In their chant, fans of a suburban Madison school insulted their city opponents by suggesting they need food stamps to eat.

The Middleton High School fans chanted "food stamps, food stamps" and "Os-car May-er" during a game against Madison East on Dec. 20.

Middleton is a well-to-do suburb, while 40 percent of Madison East's students are eligible for federally subsidized lunches.

I went to a wealthy private school and one reaction to getting our asses kicked on the playing field was to chant something like that. I hope the people who chant things like that have the decency to be embarrassed about it one day.

Reminds me of a school here that wears sombreros and yells anti-Hispanic remarks when they play a rival from a largely Hispanic neighborhood.

I've gotten to the point where I expect racist comments to come out at caucasian-only gatherings. And they usually do. Katrina really brought it out full force. A few "looting" stories and they weren't even bothering to conceal it.

20. Interestingly enough, my dad used to coach at the offending school

and my son went to the largely Hispanic school. My dad witnessed this sombrero crap when he went to a game with my son.

Dad immediately went down and talked to the coach in the locker room at halftime. The coach then asked the fans to cut it out. They didn't. Then my dad wrote a letter to the offending school newspaper and after that, they started punishing kids who were unruly in the stands at their games.

Funny thing - the following fall, they honored my dad with a hall of fame award at halftime of one of their football games. He had not coached there in nearly 30 years, but they wanted to honor him. All of a sudden. 6 months after he ripped them a new one in a letter about their unsportsmanlike conduct. We giggled over that one.

... and not permitted to play extramural sports. None. Nada. (Screw their transcripts!) Furthermore, they should create a mandatory community service course required for graduation. Some stupidity is merely a misdemeanor; this kind of institutional stupidity borders on the felonious.
