The way things should be (Cleveland Mayor's inaugural ball)

Frank Jackson, Cleveland's 56th mayor, celebrated his inauguration Saturday night without the black-tie partisanship that typically marks such affairs in the stratified world of politics.
At his free inaugural ball, promoted by Jackson as a "come as you are" party, the city's power brokers, who wrote checks to him during the campaign from the comfort of their suburban homes, waited in line to greet the new mayor with people who waited in line to vote for him Nov. 8.
"Everybody is a VIP tonight," said Valarie McCall, Jackson's chief of intergovermental affairs, who organized the event at Wolstein Center at Cleveland State University.
The nearly six-hour event, which capped Jackson's first week in office, was the only event he planned for his supporters. Other politicians have used separate inauguration events to raise money for charity, retire campaign debt or add to their campaign coffers.

Though business and civic leaders received invitations for the event, they made a modest showing. Incoming chief of staff Ken Silliman said some executives called earlier in the week seeking VIP tickets. The point, he said, is that there are none.
