Laura Bush Says Hillary Kept Bad House (new book)
Edited on Sun Apr-02-06 08:47 PM by TomInTib
I'm taking one for the team on this one so no one else has to trudge thru the muck at Sludge. I am also aware that I am pushing the number of paragraphs rule. But, hey...

LAURA BUSH SAYS HILLARY KEPT BAD HOUSE; WEST WING DECORATIONS WERE GAUDY, OUTDATED

First Lady Laura Bush believes Hillary Clinton did not keep good house during her time as first lady, a new book will charge.

Ron Kessler, a former investigative reporter for the WASHINGTON POST and the WALL STREET JOURNAL, is set to unleash his account of Laura Bush.

On December 18, 2000, just after the Supreme Court ruled on the election, Hillary Clinton gave Laura Bush a tour of the White House. The incoming-First Lady was dismayed at what she saw: Not only were carpets and furnishings fraying and in disrepair in the West Wing and public areas, the Oval Office was done in loud colors—red, blue, and gold! The East Wing was cut up into small offices and had exposed electrical conduits. Many of the furnishings looked dated.

Laura Bush noted how the Lincoln Bedroom looked worn out.

1. What's unbelievable is that Hillary was saving taxpayer dollars.
Laura just blew a few million, and not only is she proud of it, she's bashing her fiscally sensible predecessor.

249. To be fair here
Mrs. Bush married into money and Mrs. Clinton did not.

Mrs. Bush had the advantage of her wealthy mother-in-law to help her through the hoops of dealing with decorators, chefs, and domestics. She also, by virtue of marriage, had a large income

Mrs. Clinton, herself an ambitious woman, married an ambitious man and neither of them come from wealth.

If her tastes in decorating are a little more proletariat than Mrs. Bush’s, well, she had to spend more time and energy earning a buck.

her taste in husbands worse. Too bad their was so much cheating in 2004, Teresa seems to have excellent taste - from a few photos taken in their Boston house.

On the other hand, she's probably jealous that Chelsea Clinton's turned out so well, while her twins are...um...not turning out so well, so she needed to harp on Hillary about something, right?

She has a right to find a way to feel better about her otherwise aimless life, and failure as a mother to her twin daughters, so why not attack a successful attorney, ex-First Lady of one of America's most popular Presidents, U.S. Senator, and successful mother?

256. Compare and contrast
This decor, under Clinton, looks more like the Kennedy and Johnson OO:

Here is the Kennedy (replica, at the library, but in good color)--that "french" green was a popular shade back in the early 60's:

Here's Kennedy IN the office:

Now, here's my favorite photo of a Texas President in the OO--note the three TVs, tuned to the the three existing network news channels, and note the teletypes (AP/UPI/Reuters) off to the side--the veritable HEADLINE NEWS of the day. LBJ was the last Texan to actually do any WORK in the room:

And of course, everyone loved the KENNEDY desk (which was actually the HAYES desk, but JFK was the first to put it IN the OO):

President Clinton chose to use the Resolute Desk, made from the timbers of the British ship, the HMS Resolute. Abandoned north of the Arctic Circle in 1854, the HMS Resolute was later found by the crew of an American whaling ship, refitted, and sent to Queen Victoria as a token of goodwill. When the ship was later dismantled, the desk was made from timbers of the ship, and Queen Victoria gave it to President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1880. Every President from President Hayes through President Dwight D. Eisenhower used the desk; it was first placed in the Oval Office in 1961 at the request of President John F. Kennedy.

After being on exhibit for ten years at the Smithsonian Institution, the Resolute was put back into use by President Jimmy Carter. The Resolute was also used in the Oval Office by President Ronald Reagan and for a few months by President George Bush. On January 20, 1993, this historic desk was returned to the Oval Office once again, at the request of President Clinton.
http://www.virtualology.com/virtualmuseumofnaturalhistory/hallofvirtualplaces/whitehouse/theovaloffice.net/

And Monkeyboy liked that RESOLUTE desk too, even though his daddy unloaded it after a few months (quotes of Monkey babbling about the desk at the link below):

http://www.estnyboer.com/bush/desk.html

Now, let's talk about the FLOOR--Reagan designed it:

The floor of the Oval Office has been replaced three times. The first floor was made out of cork, but was ripped apart when President Eisenhower destroyed it with his golf spiked shoes. Thus President Johnson replaced the floor with wood-grain linoleum. Yet, when Reagan came to office, he disliked the linoleum and replaced it with a white pine and oak flooring. Its design is the exact same as it is today, a wagon-wheel pattern with the United States seal in the middle. The floor was replaced in 2005, but the design that Reagan laid out was kept.
http://www.american-presidents.com/articles/oval-office

So, the feature items in the current OO are Kennedy's desk, Reagan's floor, and Miss Thang slaps down an ugly ass rug...OK--that makes her Christopher Lowell in her mind....!

Give me a break!

270. Optimistic
* told her to design a rug that was OPTIMISTIC so that when anyone walked in the OO they would say, 'Boy, our President is sure OPTIMISTIC!' (Like Pickles was really going to design it herself.) I find it extremely gaudy with all those stripes and the optical illusion the rug brings to the eyes.

Are these people out of their effing minds!?? A rug is incapable of being OPTIMISTIC, isn't it?

Maybe it's the camera angle, maybe it's the lighting, maybe it's just too far away, but . . . to me, it's styled like Long John underwear! And she really needs something less "clingy." And the color isn't flattering. And then, she really should substitute something for that thing in black that she's holding onto - perhaps a small handbag, instead.

244. Designers didn't think so
This dress was widely panned as not flattering her at all and a big mistake= color and neckline in particular. So was the red prom gown she wore to the 1st inaugural.

I find her fashion sense to be a big fat 0! Look at the pants suits she wears- they all look the same only in a different color. None of her clothes are the slightest bit flattering, so I imagine her decorating taste is no better.

She is small, petty, and has nothing better to do than be catty. She has contributed absolutely nothing during her 'reign'.

32. Laura's taste so bad she makes Mamie Eisenhower look chic!
Of course, the vast majority of the citizenry will never know how Laura has "decorated" (using that term in the loosest possible sense)the White House, since the Bushes do not allow public tours. I had the delight of touring the WhitE House during the Clinton years, and it looked quite beautifully decorated to me. The style was what one would expect of the formal residence of a chief of state. But hey, what would I know? Just having toured European castles and palaces, but never having been invited to Crawford.

when Laura Bush dresses up, she has good taste and/or a great stylist--she and the twins all wear Oscar de la Renta all the time, and it always looks great.

As far as everyday, blech... but blech on most people's sense of fashion.

55. Pickles can say what she wants about Hillary but at least Hillary
could keep her staff. Pickles has gone through more personnel then the Pentagon has over the last five years. Evidently she is a little hard to work for (isn't that code speak for bitch?). There was a news blurb about it the other night - Pickles is looking for another new chef - this last one didn't make it a year. Gone through several Chief of Staff and a sundry of other positions. Good help is just so hard to find when you a difficult.

Hillary worked on health care for everyone, has worked for 20+ years on children and education issues, is a very popular Senator, a serious presidential contender (whether you like her or not, she is being considered), is beloved the world over and has more class in her little finger then the entire Bush clan could russle up if they included the last 10 generations. And Pickles wants to knock Hillary's housekeeping skills? Oh, puhleeze.

Pickles chain smokes, pops Xanax, and has shot so much Botox she has out-Jokered Jack Nicholson. She has managed to raised two girls in her exact same image so I guess the world in due to suffer another generation of vamped useless Bushies. Oh, and she designed a rug, one damn, tacky, flashy carpet for her damn, tacky, stupid husband. We should have a public burning ceremony of that piece of trash when he leaves office (I'm talking about the rug... I think).

Yeah, Pickles, talk about Hillary.

It's the ugly insides and souls of Dimson, the other sons, Bar and Poppy that make them so hideous and evil.

I have no comment about Laura or the twins. (If you don't have something nice to say don't say anything at all.) Anyway, children are not fair game - except for the stupid frat boy Pierce who recently blabbed his mouth off on national TV.

What happened to Nicole Bush (Jeb's daughter)? She doesn't seem to be in this picture. She had such a difficult time with drug addiction.
It seems like she was been banned from this event.

Every freeper in America will buy this and place it in their Bookshelf of Honor next to "Millie's Book" and "A Charge to Keep."

They won't actually read it, but they'll feel obligated to buy it.

You just watch, though: in six months, it will be one of the premiums for joining the Conservative Book Club. And in nine months, the Home Depot will sell the remainders--but Home Depot will sell it as a package deal: buy this bag of insulation and we'll guarantee it contains at least two ground-up copies of Laura Bush's White House Style Book and three ground-up copies of Ann Coulter's latest tome.

222. Humble, homely Abe Lincoln must be spinning in his crypt.
The Presidents that Americans remember as "great" Presidents seem to be noteworthy for their humble backgrounds, and for maintaining a sense of perspective which kept their high-profile office from going to their heads. The Republicans, the Party of Primogeniture, really, REALLY, WANT the President to be a royal figure -- one with kingly powers, but no more depth or substance than a high school prom "king". They're most of the way there.

I'm glad to see that others in this thread picked up on this as an act of DISRESPECT to the name of Lincoln.

Lincoln never, ever slept in that room or in that bed. Mary Todd Lincoln purchased the bed for him, but he died before it was ever used. The room is simply a grouping of Civil War era furniture and Lincoln memorabilia.

277. "...he died before it was ever used." That kind of answers the question.
Lincoln was assassinated by a Confederate sympathizer, after having led the country to a victory over the forces of slavery. It's hard not to sense an air of martyrdom about his name, because of that. Anything associated with Lincoln is a little bit sacred to some people, not entirely without reason.

89. Next Chapter: Laura Bush Says Hillary Didn't Kill Her Boyfriend
Edited on Sun Apr-02-06 09:33 PM by FredScuttle
First Lady Laura Bush believes Hillary Clinton did not show sufficient homicidal tendencies in high school, a new book will charge.

Blah Blah-Blah, a former investigative reporter for the Blah-Blah-RW-Rag, is set to unleash his account of Laura Bush's teenage dedication to murder.

"She handled her high school romance very badly," says the First Lady. "Hillary should have run his ass over with a station wagon like I did to the schmuck I was dating. I handled my business"

Laura Bush noted how crushed her boyfriend looked after she plowed into him.

But what do you expect from a woman who married what could be the dumbest man in the world, turned out two trampy daughters, and murdered a high school friend?

Hillary should be proud that Laura Bush doesn't approve of her, or her poor housekeeping. It shows Hillary is of higher standards.

125. what PICKLES did to the Lincoln Bedroom -- WashPost
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A48972-2004Sep24.html

September 2004

........in the first sweeping rethink of the Lincoln Bedroom in at least three decades, the timid lemon walls, celery-green curtains and pale floral carpet are being banished in favor of a blast of Victorian bliss.

Heady hues of emerald green, golden yellow and deep purple will carpet the floor, drape the windows and envelop the massive, six-foot-tall carved headboard. Walls will be papered in a restrained palette of cream tones -- a nod to contemporary tastes -- but the pattern has been derived from the Victorian Age. Two elaborate cornices such as might have topped windows in Lincoln's day have been carved and sent to the gilders. An opulent white marble mantel was commissioned to better complement a rococo-style mirror installed last summer.

The pièce de résistance, both decoratively and symbolically, will be a carved bed canopy in the shape of a crown. It too has been sent for gilding. When affixed to the ceiling, the crown will support yards of regal purple satin over white lace, both trailing to the floor.

snip

Gilded crowns and royal colors strike an unusual note in a house carefully stage-managed to symbolize the democracy. Neither element would have been acceptable to George Washington, who was advised to surround himself only with things that were "substantially good and majestically plain." Eagles were fine in "the President's House." Allusions to monarchy would have been anathema.

..................
This would explain the bow on the stomach of Laura's ball gowns.

The symbols which were purged from the WH are the symbols of DEMOCRACY. The new symbols are the symbols of PRIVILEGED ROYALTY. You have to wonder if they meant for it to be this blatantly obvious, or just didn't realize they were revealing so much of themselves.

150. I remember reading about the Clinton White House
Hillary hired a decorator to emulate the rooms consistent with the time in history that each room was initially decorated. The American Victorian style was one of them and that style we would consider today as being overly ornate. My late mother in law collected antiques from that period, but they are wood furniture, not drapes and upholstered pieces. The furniture is in my house and is beautiful and has great craftmanship.

If this is all that Laura's got on Hillary, then the repubs are truly desperate. Out of bullets and shooting blanks.

Like most of the rest of us, Hillary had shit to do, unlike you. Like a lot of working women, she let the house go in order to get other things done. She didn't see the need to spend a lot of taxpayer money (read: MY money and your money) to remodel the house.

I think you have better things to do with your time than to worry about what Hillary did or didn't do with the drapes. Oh, wait...you're married to Idiot-In-Chief... OK, that explains why you act like Marie Antoinette. Off with Pickles' head! :P

The Clinton redecorated when they came into the White House. I read at the time that they tried to re-install some Victorian decoration, which people from the prairies of Midland Texas may not understand. The Clintons were in office for 8 years. It made sense for them to defer additional expenses because they knew the new administration would want to install their own tastes.

There are regular stories from every administration saying that the decor of the White House was out of date when they came in.

171. "Inside The White House"
Kessler wrote another book during the first Clinton Administration which was one of those "backstairs at the White House" type books -- you know, where they talk about things like what the family likes to eat, various bits of gossip, etc.

Surprise, surprise. The only presidential family that came off well -- and on his promotional tour he said this himself -- were the Bushes. Everyone else he pictured as fake and putting on a front. And yes, he repeated all the Clinton rumors as fact.

The best part was an interview he did with an anonymous "Washington insider" where the guy said the most important thing for a President to have was someone that was willing to tell you the truth "with the bark off" and that Clinton's problem was that he was too arrogant to accept opposing opinions.

From what I remember from the White House book Hillary wrote, she was trying to kind of go back to the way the rooms were decorated in the Monroe Administration -- or at least one of the early Presidents.

"He likes to have sex with eggs. He likes them smeared all over naked male bodies."

Hillary and Bill were so obviously better parents and raised a very classy daughter.

Any good parent will tell you, raising your child is priority. The hell with the house.

252. sounds like a place where people actually worked and visited
"Not only were carpets and furnishings fraying and in disrepair in the West Wing and public areas, the Oval Office was done in loud colors—red, blue, and gold! The East Wing was cut up into small offices and had exposed electrical conduits."

Now how would things in the public areas get frayed? Maybe by letting the public into the White House, which they're, after all, paying for? Small offices with exposed conduits? Sounds like someone was trying to get some work done in a building that was designed before computers - not to mention electricity - were invented.

"Many of the furnishings looked dated."

I thought this was called "The Classic Look". Nice to know Ms Clinton didn't spend money on new furnishings when the old ones were still serviceable.

As a friend is fond of saying, "Only boring women have immaculate houses".

257. why fuss?
When I first read the story off the Drudge Report a few days ago, I didn't think Laura was derrogatory toward Hillary in the quote from the book. The story tried to make it seem so. Also, in a whole book, a small mention about some fabric being worn out, or out of style after 13 years of use seems like a normal comment we would all make about our own houses.

281. If if wasn't a big thing, then why even mention it?
Remember, this is the most image-controlled White House in recorded history. Nothing is said without having a specific purpose. For example, "Saddam supports terrorists like those who attacked us on 9-11" was carefully worded to link two unrelated items (Saddam = 9-11) in the listener's mind yet provide deniability (which they've resorted to lately) when things go to shit in Iraq and people ask "Why the f*ck are we there?"

You move into a house someone's lived in for eight years and it's going to be worn. The decorating most certainly will not match your taste. Wouldn't the world be a sorry place if everyone liked the same thing? You might accept it as part of life, or maybe make a sly comment to your spouse, BUT YOU WOULD NEVER PUT IT INTO PRINT! That's why this series of posts has gone on so long. Besides, making tacky comments about someone else's tackiness is just plain fun!

I agree with some earlier messages about how * has shut the doors to the People's House to all except the Chosen Few. Very few public tours means very little wear and tear on the furnishings.

There's also the question about the timing. Why now? What are they trying to distract us from? That it's wrong to end a sentence with a preposition?

Or am I just not remembering how I've seen it pictured over the years?

What a pile of crap. They make it sound like it was Hillary's responsibility to personally clean the entire building.

This is just another bunch of lies like the ones about the staff tearing up the computers the day they left. But I'm sure it will give Rush and Hannity a whole new reason to hate the Clintons.

290. That can't be done in Photoshop; that's all makeup
You're looking at four hours in the makeup chair and a full brick of film to get that one image.

I really don't think it's her vanity--at least not all of it. The Bushes' handlers are attempting to create this wonderful little Republican Camelot with Dubya as JFK, Pickles as Jackie and Crawford as Cape Cod. If you can get past the parts where the new JFK and the new Jackie are middle-aged, classless louts with brazillions of dollars in the bank but who dress and act like po' white trash and where the new Cape Cod looks very much like Dante's conception of hell, it all works.

But seriously...there's very little Photoshop work in that. If the stylists do their jobs, about all you've got to do to a portrait like this is get rid of the oil bubbles from scanning the transparency.

300. I remember being told in third grade by our suitably misty-eyed teacher
Edited on Tue Apr-04-06 01:29 AM by darkmaestro019
that in America we have the White House because the President lives in "a regular house just like anybody, and not a palace" in rejection of monarchy, basically--and looking at pictures similar to these with a thought that has become sadly familiar since--"You're full of it, that's utter BS." I did try to tell her that the White House certainly looks like a palace to me, and she said "But it isn't!" Apparently because of, uh, the NAME. During this same session of brainwashing we were assured that any one of us could grow up to be President, too.

A palace is a palace whether you call it a chicken coop or a spaceship or a Twinkie. Regular house. Like anyone. Can I call our car a Cadillac and resell it for more?

I don't know about you guys, but the house I grew up in looked NOTHING like this "regular house." It was a singlewide trailer with carpet so worn it looked like a dirt floor. Since then I've lived in a variety of thrown-together apartments. Our current Lair features On Site Laundry--a washer and a dryer on the other side of the wall from my living room. The dryer is very good at what sounds like a sea lion mating-call. For a quarter it will make this noise for twenty minutes or so at any hour day or night. That's about all it does, too--clothes come out as wet as they went in. Our freezer doesn't freeze, but the top shelf of the fridge does. The hot water tap in the kitchen apparently wants to get some of that hottie dryer--it sings back whenever I turn it on. And the toilet has an attitude problem; it flushes fine, but sometimes it won't stop for awhile.

Tacky drapes and exposed wiring! You poor blueblooded dear--how could you stand to live in such a SLUM?
