1. No mention of the giant flying vampire frogs of Valhalla, FL

As described in a column in an April issue of OMNI magazine, sometime during the mid-1970s (I think). The species was on the endangered species list so it's Florida habitat couldn't be developed into a golf course, though a plan was being considered to have one of the holes partially encroaching on the habitat in order to offer the occasional golfer as nourishment to the non-lethal creatures. They apparently got a lot of mail on that one by readers who believed the story.
