WASHINGTON (AFP) - Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, who triggered the demise of the Soviet Union's Communist empire, said in an interview that the United States was "intoxicated" by its power and should not impose its will on others.

"This talk of pre-emptive strikes, of ignoring the UN Security Council and international legal obligations -- all this is leading toward a dark night," Gorbachev told Time magazine.

"I think some people may be pushing president Bush in the wrong direction," he said of the US leader.

"America is intoxicated by its position as the world's only superpower. It wants to impose its will.

3. what is the difference?
it will be a very long time before the US is released from the bush cabal's tentacles. In the mean time bush policies are america's policies. Sad but true.

4. If the shoe was on the other foot...?
Not saying Gorby is wrong, but nobody likes feeling pushed around by 'the boss'. Doesn't mean if they were the boss they wouldn't do the same thing. Also not saying that makes it right, just that, neither viewpoint is particularly motivated by objectivity.

5. Well, I'm not intoxicated by our power.
And I don't appreciate being included in that broad description Gorby is using.

6. The difference is this...
He wasn't elected and he doesn't represent America.
