Courtney & Nirvana: Smells Like a Sellout
http://music.yahoo.com/read/news/31152760

Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit"--coming soon to a soap ad near you?

So far Courtney Love is ruling that out, but chances are we'll be hearing more of the seminal grunge band's music in unexpected places now that Kurt Cobain's cash-strapped widow has agreed to sell off a 25 percent stake in the Nirvana song catalog in a deal valued at $50 million, per Rolling Stone.

<snip>

In an interview with Blender magazine last year, Love claimed that "$40 million has been stolen from me and Frances by a fiduciary institution." In July, she blamed former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl for her financial woes, telling Spin magazine that Grohl had been "taking money from my child for years."

Aside from the wrangling over Nirvana, Love's once considerable fortune has been sapped by lawsuits, liens and numerous drug-related charges. In January, a mortgage company took possession of a Seattle-area house owned by Love (and the former residence of Cobain's sister), after the singer-actress failed to make payments. Last August, a Manhattan financial firm moved to foreclose on her pricey New York condo, claiming she had not made a mortgage payment in months.

3. What's the difference between Courtney Love and Wayne Gretzky?
Gretzky takes a shower after three periods.

14. Or Yoko Ono, cashing in on her dead husband's name
Although Courtney is such a skanky whore. She has about as much musical talent as Yoko does.

Yoko at least understood how to invest John's money and make more of it for his kid (I don't know if her skills benefitted Julian at all, but they sure have made Sean rich).

21. Not that I am a Courtney fan, but obviously the police didn't think so
I've read some of the conspiracy theories regarding Kurt's death. He tried to commit suicide previously, so the police had good reason to believe it was suicide.

8. I HATE Courtney Love.
Along with Condi Rice, Ruth Kelly (smug British politician), David Cameron (ditto), and Nick Griffin (smug British nazi) she is one of the five people I am going to punch in the face one of these days.

9. Ugh, no better than I expected from that horrible woman.
She should make her own damn music. Oh yeah, she tried that. It was awful.

Well, I suppose it was bequeathed to her, but Kurt would have hated this. I still hold her partially responsible for his death in the first place.

Oh well, the music will live on, but I will despise any brand that uses it to flog their stuff.

Ugh, ugh, I just had a mental image of a Nirvana-backed Tommy Hilfiger ad. :puke:

12. Courtney Love wrote some wonderful songs .....
She obviously has a grasp of rock composition ....

I'm not sure why she should be ravaged here for her art .... She isnt the first artist in this world to poorly control her own finances .... what a shock ....

I personally regret any choice to 'sellout' her art, or Kurt's, because she needs money ... But one might ask where the ugly condemnations of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Paul McCartney .... Didnt they sellout as well ? ...

Love's music in Hole IS her own, and it is pretty fucking impressive .....

15. Well, not to my taste, at least.

And you're right that she's not talentless. But not a patch on Kurt.

I did concede that the rights were bequeathed to her, so they are her property, and I'd add that it's easy for me to criticise because I'm not in her position.

But I hold her partly responsible for Kurt's death, and thus will never like her.

As for the others, I don't know about Plant, Page and Richards, but I do know that the Stones and the Beatles did an awful lot of commercial endorsements right from their early days, so presumably they didn't have that much trouble with it. Cobain, however, hated the notion.

(I'm happy to be rude about Paul "frog chorus" McCartney any time you like, but might get lynched ...)

19. I agree, Trajan
Celebrity Skin is fine disk, imho. I'm not too familiar with her Hole catalog (LOL! A pun that's at once cute and offensive-sounding), but I think what I've heard is certainly as good as, and a lot better than, a lot of the crap on the airwaves now.

10. Oh no! Someone making money in the music industry
This is unheard of. Why, oh why can't these artists and their families just provide us music for the sheer enjoyment of playing? Nobody is supposed to be making any money, right Mr. Geffen? Mr. Mottola?

on songs that are over 10 years old.

17. So who should profit from the Cobain oeuvre?
I mean, if not his widow -- skanky as everyone seems to think she is -- who should by rights be entitled to any money to be made off his estate, which includes the rights to his creative output?

Now that you've pissed it up, you're blaming the other members while offering to sell off your share? I thought you'd KICKED your drug habit! And between your rehab and your lawyers, I don't know why you can't account for your missing forty mil!
