Kerry calls Bush bluff on rebuilding small Gulf Coast businesses

The Bush Administration has not met its promise to issue $1.5 billion to small and disadvantaged businesses to clear and rebuild the hurricane-damaged Gulf Coast, Sen. John Kerry, D, Mass., declared.

The Homeland Security department had promised that the contracts would be issued by February.

Kerry said that hundreds of small and local businesses have applied for the contracts, but the administration has left them “hanging out to dry.”

In the meantime, Kerry said the administration needs to meet its promise to reopen competition for another $1.5 billion that was issued in no-bid contracts to “the big four” corporate cronies of the administration. They are the Shaw Group, Bechtel Corp., CH2M Hill Inc., and the Fluor Corp., which have been providing temporary housing for displaced Gulf residents.

1. Speak up - let your voice be heard, Mr. Kerry
We need your help.

Folks don't realize, the mismanagement of the Katrina/Wilma/Rita efforts is costing the taxpayers millions of dollars and the people most in need are getting the help.

Thank you John Kerry :patriot:

4. Bush Inc wants the small-business owners to GET OUT OF THE WAY of the
big corporation buddies. They want to starve them out by holding up the Small Business money that Kerry pushed for Katrina victims last year.

How any small-business owner ever thought BushInc would be good for them is amazing - it is pure fantasy sold by a corporate media.

5. We wouldn't want a bait shop to challenge a casino on..
eminent domain, would we?

Just think of all the small business owners that went for that bs. They should have asked SBOs from Texas.

6. Alot of those small-businesses are minority-owned. I dare say BushInc is
well aware of that fact.

7. Not only are the screwing small businesses, but they're using slave labor.
Hiring illegal immigrants and undocumented workers, promising them a paycheck after two weeks, and then firing them 13 days into the job.

Fired = no pay.

Illegal & undocumented = no legal recourse for being screwed.

I'm distinguishing between illegal and undocumented because there are many, many legal immigrants living on the coast whose documentation got washed out to sea with Katrina's storm surge. Immigration is not being cooperative in helping them obtain duplicate records of their papers. There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of FOIA requests in to release these records. It's all bollixed down here!

11. This is exactly the type of topic Lou Dobbs SHOULD be covering, but,
for some reason he won't. He pushes the meme that both parties serve big business interests while ignoring very REAL stories that prove they do NOT.

He's an oddball - he's either pushing Repub policies or pushing Green memes regarding both parties. Either way he consistently aligns against Democrats and ignores their proposals to benefit the working class and the small business owners.
