Three men charged with castration in sadomasochistic 'dungeon'

Three men arrested last week on charges they castrated people at a sadomasochistic "dungeon" in the western North Carolina mountains were given court-appointed lawyers at a brief hearing Monday.

Richard Sciara, 61, Michael Mendez, 60, and Danny Reeves, 49, were charged Thursday with castration without malice, practicing medicine without licenses and conspiracy.

Investigators from the Haywood County Sheriff's Office have said at least six men traveled from the United States and other countries to have their genitals mutilated.

The men met through a Web site produced in North Carolina that published photographs of men engaging in sadomasochistic behavior at a house in Waynesville. Investigators found DVD recordings of the castrations during a search of the house Wednesday, authorities said. "This right here beats everything I have ever seen," Alexander said.

Funny thing, I read about this the other day here and then saw it in my morning paper today because the first two men mentioned are from my city. The people who bought the house wondered about them when they found a video camera pointed at a bed in the basement. Wouldn't you have called someone about something like that?

I'm guessing in an attempt to stop transgender surgeries.

The men believed that since the mutilations were conducted with consenting adults, their behavior was not illegal. However, according to North Carolina law, penis and testes removal is illegal, especially if not performed by a qualified licensed doctor.
