Couric move all but certain

One of the longest guessing games in TV news — whether NBC Today star Katie Couric will leave to join The CBS Evening News as the first solo female network news anchor — appears to have been resolved.

Couric and CBS have tentatively reached a deal that could be announced any day now, but probably by the end of the week, two sources close to the negotiations said Monday.

The deal calls for Couric — arguably the biggest star in network news — to anchor the third-place Evening News, contribute to newsmagazine 60 Minutes and have some yet-to-be-announced prime-time role, possibly producing specials, the sources said.

Neither NBC nor CBS would comment Monday. Couric makes about $15 million a year at NBC, making her the highest paid anchor in television. CBS' offer is expected to top that.

6. Katie Couric makes my skin crawl....
...every square inch of it.

And before anyone wants to label that as a misogynist statement, I feel the same way about Matt Lauer...so THERE.

scrape slowly across a 20' blackboard. I stopped watching the Today Show in the 90's because of her & now I won't be watching CBS News or 60 Minutes because of her. She is nauseating.

Back when Clinton was president, the Today Show showed a feature in which Nancy Reagan was showing Katie Couric the new Reagan library. When they approached a display of Pope Paul memorabilia, the conversation led to Nancy Reagan commenting that "Pope Paul & Ronnie had a lot in common." Katie Couric gushed all over that comment, as if she were in agreement. Rosalyn Carter would have set off a media firestorm with a comment like that about Jimmy Carter, who happens to live by Jesus' teachings.

12. Her war profiteer bosses know she is smart enough to propel the propaganda
for the Bu$h administration and said enablers which "little miss box of rocks" will gladly prostitute for. I only watch network news by accident and never more than 20-30 seconds at a time. I was never much into pornography. And watching the media prostitutes suck up and bend over to the Bu$h administration and the corporate elite is pornographic to the extreme.

I wish Couric would take her money and her teeth and go away.

What happened to using actual journalists instead of spokesmodels, male or female aside?

...I just don't get the "appeal"...

I don't understand why this woman has a career as a newscaster.

She's like an unholy cross between Jan Brady and Stewart from "Mad TV."

19. AWESOME!!!
Because of her interviewing style, I've taken to calling her the "toasted marshmallow". I still get a chuckle when I think of the interview with Howard Dean when he basically made her shit sneaker tread.

She has the personality of curdled milk when it's mixed with a liquefied bowel movement. May CBS get what it has paid for.

20. CBS are fools to hire her for this...

She has no journalistic credentials. She's a lightweight and I predict will bring disaster to the CBS newsroom as far as ratings go.

I mean really, will she do a scoop on "Where in the World is Matt Lauer?"

23. I think I'll take a "wait and see" approach
Sometimes people surprise you. The "Today" show is rather a fluff show -- therefore, its denizens tend to be... er... "fluffy" (for want of a better word, obviously). Perhaps the soul of an Edward R. Murrow or a Walter Cronkite resides within Katie, and will show itself in a new venue.

On the other hand, maybe the soul of an Ann Coulter will be revealed. Time will tell.

24. Couric used to be liberal. Once * came in the door, things changed.
Keith Olberman said that many NBC and GE Execs don't want to see any critizism of Bush and the GOP.
Maybe she'll turn back to her old self, or maybe not. We'll see.

But she adores the BFEE. I wouldn't be surprised if the Bush family helped get her the NBC job.

25. As I don't watch ANY Network News, I really couldn't care less, but
I've read a couple of the stories on this. I was struck by the veteran news people who were critical of the choice of Couric to anchor at CBS:

But critics contend that the usual Today fluff and Couric's cheerful demeanor could be a negative once she assumes her new post because she may lack the gravitas necessary for the job.

Matthew Felling, media director at the D.C.-based Center for Media and Public Affairs, says that after reviewing 300 pages of Today transcripts, he found Couric had a tendency "if not to make the story all about her, at least to make the story partly about her and you just cannot do that when you're discussing serious things like the economy or Iraq."

{snip)
The sentiment was echoed by Erik Sorenson, onetime president of MSNBC and former producer of the CBS Evening News, who told the Post: "A lot of her considerable talents don't translate to the evening news because they can't, by definition. You cannot sing a cabaret number on the evening news. They won't have her ski. They won't have her dance."
