If You Could Bring Someone Back To Life To Save Our Country (& World),Who
would it be?

Puul Wellstone comes to mind first, but then there are more, like Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy, Mel Carnahan, JFK Jr., FDR, and I know there are more, but I'll start there. Too hard to narrow it down to one person.

30. I third that...
my folks lived thru the Hoover Republican Great Depression and considered FDR a God...

thank him for Social Security, Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)...CCC workers across the country constructed 41,000 bridges and built 44,475 buildings. They also constructed 3,982,000 dams as a form of erosion control, and devoted full time to soil conservation work on 4 million acres in 31 states. The men made shelter belts, fire lanes, trails, and rural roads.

And yes, I know he's not dead.

15. Teddy Roosevelt
Edited on Tue Apr-04-06 09:02 PM by MissWaverly
Why because he believe that the people had the right to criticize the
President, he was a progressive and he believed in the environment,
if ever, we needed someone who understands our responsibility to
conserve the planet, brother, it's now.

Defenders of the short-sighted men who in their greed and selfishness will, if permitted, rob our country of half its charm by their reckless extermination of all useful and beautiful wild things sometimes seek to champion them by saying the 'the game belongs to the people.' So it does; and not merely to the people now alive, but to the unborn people. The 'greatest good for the greatest number' applies to the number within the womb of time, compared to which those now alive form but an insignificant fraction. Our duty to the whole, including the unborn generations, bids us restrain an unprincipled present-day minority from wasting the heritage of these unborn generations. The movement for the conservation of wild life and the larger movement for the conservation of all our natural resources are essentially democratic in spirit, purpose, and method.

A Book-Lover's Holidays in the Open, 1916 - the book is not that great, it
is basically a travelogue, I shot a cougar from 40 feet in the moonlight,
but this is a great quote.

19. No ONE! (Read this)
We don't need a "hero" to come back and save us; all the people listed here are incredible, wonderful people who WOULD help, but that's besides the point.

History is taught to us in a way that is top to bottom; we think some superhero at the top always did something fantastic and saved the world.

That's not how it works. WE are the people who will save America and the world. Learn to believe in yourselves and US!

38. I loved his stand on pre-emptive war
Republican Abraham Lincoln on Pre-Emptive War
A BUZZFLASH READER COMMENTARY
by Jane Hawes

"Allow the President to invade a neighboring nation, whenever HE shall deem it necessary to repel an invasion, and you allow him to do so, WHENEVER HE MAY CHOOSE TO SAY he deems it necessary for such a purpose - and you allow him to make war at pleasure."

Lincoln then goes on to explain why the Framers gave Congress, and not the President, the power to declare war: " Kings had always been involving and impoverishing their people in wars, pretending ... that the good of the people was the object. This, our Convention understood to be the most oppressive of all Kingly oppressions, and they resolved to so frame the Constitution that NO ONE MAN should hold the power of bringing this oppression on us."

47. ditto that
All the people listed so far are heroes, but it's not as though they had millions and millions of followers while they were here.

I would LOVE to see Jesus come back and set his followers straight. For all my cynicism about organized religion, I think the majority of the followers of the religious right are simple, well-meaning people who've been taught since childhood that anything but blind obedience is naughty--who honestly believe that their leaders would never use them for political power or deliberately lead them astray. I would love for them to hear Jesus' truth from Jesus' own mouth and start to live according to his teachings. The country and maybe even the world would become a gentler, more compassionate place if Jesus came back today.
