We have the sort of president who sets high expectations. He expects that if someone is doing something wrong, they should stop it, and pay for it.

Because of that attitude at the top, nobody tries to hide miscreants and criminal bozos.

Remember when Bush first took office, there were lots of busts featuring top execs in big corporations? Think these guys started breaking the law on Jan 19, 2001? I think that the previous justice dept had let a lot of stuff slide. Bush changed that, and let it be known that nobody got sheltered.

So now, this idiot mucks up, and all the cops know that they have support from the very top to act.

I don't see this as hurting Bush- it reinforces the image that he's tough, fair, and expects everyone to perform to high levels.

Of course, to them it looks good for Bush that all these big bad boys are getting busted on his watch. Because they haven't thought about it far down enough to figure out that some of this would have never happened in the first place had the government REALLY been doing its job.

IOW, serious limiting and strictly-enforced rules of lobbyists and campaign funds might have prevented Abramoff from getting away with the amount of damage he did. The "re-districting" issue may have been blocked. Ken Lay couldn't have been stopped by the law from destroying Enron BEFORE he actually destroyed Enron?

Gotta hand it to those righties, they're great at reacting to situations. If you present them with a problem, they'll find a way to twist and defend it. But to actively seek reform in order to do "preventative maintenance" so these problems don't occur in the first place requires slightly more "thinking" and a few more grey areas they're not accustomed to looking at.
