Poll question: What jobs would YOU do for $50 per hour?
John McCain says Americans wouldn't pick lettuce for $50 per hour.

The American worker will do a lot worse for a lot less.

What jobs would YOU do for $50 per hour?

They're college graduates. I at least HOPE they can use a fork and a toilet.

What they CAN'T use is common sense.

Hey, even if I only lasted an hour, the $50 would be good coin for an honest hour's work.

23. John Sydney McCain III
Senator John McCain was born in Coco Solo in the U.S controlled Panama Canal Zone to Scottish-American parents. Both his father and grandfather were prominent U.S. Navy admirals (John S. McCain, Jr. and John S. McCain, Sr.). He attended Episcopal High School and graduated in 1954. That fall, McCain, like his father and grandfather, entered the United States Naval Academy. He has admitted that he disliked the life of a midshipman. Accordingly, McCain was a lackluster student and received many demerits. He graduated in 1958, and joked that he had followed the footsteps of his father and grandfather, both of whom had graduated very low in their respective classes at Annapolis. (McCain graduated 894th out of a class of 899.) In 1965, McCain married Carol Shepp, a model originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The couple divorced in 1980.

McCain lives with his second wife Cindy Hensley McCain in Phoenix. She is the chair of the large Anheuser-Busch beer and liquor distributor Hensley Distributing founded by her father.

Easy job that would involve lots of hanging out in bars, and shopping in high-end malls for new clothes. It would be fun.

12. Do lettuce pickers really get $50 an hour?.
That just doesn't seem right to me. For $50 an hour, I could get two friends to do the job with me. We'd each do a third of the job and make $16.50 an hour, which is still a pretty decent wage.

22. I think they receive this every hour
Two dollars
A canteen of water
A chit--save up four of them and you can redeem them for a five-minute bathroom break
One threat of getting La Migra called in on them if they don't pick more heads per hour

No American will ever be hired to pick lettuce because the growers' most effective motivational technique--work or get deported--won't work on someone who isn't eligible for deportation.

If lettuce pickers really got $50 per hour, lettuce would be around $5 per head more than it is.

24. Exactly.
So why did McCain make the "$50" crack? Does *he* think people are getting paid $50 an hour to pick lettuce? It's just bizarre.

26. Why McCain made the $50 crack
Bush has decided there are jobs Americans won't do, hence the need for illegal immigrants.

His new friend John McCain basically said, "you wouldn't do this even if we paid you ten times the going rate." IOW, distortion of the truth to make a point. (And since this administration looks at truth through funhouse mirrors...)

McCain knows no one gets paid $50 per hour to pick lettuce...nor to do much of anything else. $400/day jobs are extremely hard to come by.

13. Hell, over summers I did the equivalent for a quarter above
minimum wage. Blazing hot scrap yards on cutting torches, road work, nursing home ass wiping, bartending to Republican frat boys, janitor in K-Mart - whatever it took to pay for college. I know for certain there are many Americans out there now doing the same - and they would be lucky to get that 25 cents above minimum, even today. McCain is a moran.

Edited on Wed Apr-05-06 09:05 AM by melissinha
She was basically saying that if being a lobbyist only paid $5, no one would do it..... its that americans will do most jobs, only at a fair price.... so yes, we would do most anything for $50 an hour. There are only a few things I wouldn't do... shill for Republicans....

Now nanny for the Bushes, I would SO do that, it would give you the chance to un-brainwash them to become real decent people.....

19. $50/hour is $100K/Year
McCain has his head up his ass if he doesn't think Americans would pick lettuce for that.

I lived in Oregon when Reagan was president. They had a crackdown on illegal immigrants. All the apple growers in the Hood River area started complaining that the apples were going to rot on the trees because no Americans would do the work. About 2 days later, the farmers were placing ads on TV and radio in the Portland area telling people not to come to Hood River looking for work. Apparently the area was overwhelmed with Americans who had come to pick the apples.

20. I have been a chambermaid at a dive motel
and a bartender at a place where creepy locals hang out.

And I was pleasant the entire time. For $50/hour, I would have done it and had a shit-eating Disney-employee-worthy grin on my face from punch-in until punch-out.

33. All except 8: Being Nanny to Little Satans can get you killed
Which one of Marvin Little Monsters murdered their Nanny by rolling the car over her?

Naturally, we'll never know. As with all Imperial Family murders, it was an "accident"

http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?pagename=article&node=&contentId=A46190-2003Oct5¬Found=true

Your life isn't worth a fucking penny if the Imperial Family, whichever of them and for whatever the reason they want you dead.

Then you're dead and no one will lift a finger.
