Alrighty then...thinking of just women, who should have gotten the CBS gig
Though I don't like Couric I want to make sure we aren't just bitching because deep down we don't think a woman can do the job.

So what woman would you have picked for the CBS Anchor chair?

11. What do you mean...Walter Cronkite a legand in the news biz
sat @ that chair. Dan Rather sat @ that chair. It is important. The next person will frame the way news is presented to the masses for DECADES.

It matters baby.

20. It matters to people who can only make decisions when
people like Cronkite, Rather, et al, tell them to make decisions.

I mean, this whole "OMG it's Katie Couric at CBS, now who's going to make my decisions for me" hand-wringing is pretty damned pathetic.

TV news is dying and will soon be dead. The internet will take over the news role. We no longer live in the 1980's.

I've always thought that Margaret Warner is underappreciated.

She's no glamorpuss, nor is she a "personality." But she is great as a host/interviewer. She does her homework, and asks questions that are probing -- but she's not one of the nitwits who badger guests to show how "tough" they are. (Think most CNN anchorettes.)

i also have absolutely no idea what her personal politics or opinions are. That's as it should be.

Edited on Wed Apr-05-06 12:18 PM by MadHound
*Gasp*I know, a revolutionary thought, but that's just the way I am:shrug:

Face it, Katie was hired to be the perky, grinning, giggling little sex-pot headlinging the Today Show, that was her job, and she did it well. It was a way for her to get to the big time, and she took it. I think that she has gotten typecast though, and as we can see, people aren't willing to throw away their preconcieved notions of how well she'll do as an anchor.

Well, just in case you've all forgotten, Katie has worked the hard news beat at ABC, CNN and NBC, and has gotten deserved praise for it, including an Emmy.

I think people need to wait and see how she does. She's going into an entirely different gig now, and I'm sure she'll act accordingly. Until then:shrug:

78. It's okay to have conservatives as well as liberals, but journalists
are supposed to leave their politics behind and present the facts and the whole story as they know it at that time. Gwen is probably under contract to PBS and couldn't move anyway.

When my husband and I traveled around the country, we saw many black, women anchors on TV. I'm sure there are many more to pick from.

53. I love her. I think she's in her mid 60's. I think they want someone who
can do a good 25 years.

54. Though I love her. Nope. She'd make a great Christanne Amanpour
for another news agency.

56. Too young and inexperienced. She needs seasoning, but
if her traumatic kidnapping doesn't damage her it will make her stronger. She should be able to step into Katie Couric's shoes then in a decade or so.

62. Anybody remember Ashleigh Banfield? She tried to be fair.
But Christiane would be great! Not happy about Katy. Won't watch it.
Actually I thought - though not a woman - that John Roberts should have got it. He'd only been
side-kick for years and years. Should have been natural to go with him, IMHO. But he's on CNN now. Evening news is probably on its way out - alas.

70. Banfield was fantastic, but they pushed her out at MSNBC after
she protested the way the embedding was going for the Iraq War, if I remember correctly.

72. I think you are right and quite honestly I hope so. If this shuts off
the propaganda outfits I'm all for it. This will probably be an opportunity for other markets to pick it up like radio and maybe C-SPAN for those of us who have to have our news. Another DUer has put up information about viewer supported news, like PBS to air on LinkTV in 2007.

94. Did you know Ashleigh is now on Court TV?
I didn't -- just did a search for her to see if there's anything current; and it seems she's co-hosting a show with Jack Ford called Courtside - comes on at noon CDT. Will have to remember to check it out tomorrow.

I think I'd rather have Warner.

with such compassion, Meserve is her last name. I could totally trust that lady.
