Bob Barr says McKinney is living proof of need for "preemptive" arrest

The doctrine of pre-emptive arrests, which has already found currency in the Bush administration national security policy of pre-emptive war, makes for a much tidier law enforcement agenda than the current situation in which prosecutors and police have to spend sometimes extensive resources actually proving a crime has occurred and that a particular person is guilty of criminal actions.

In the case at hand involving McKinney, for example, her disdain for the police force on Capitol Hill is well-known and previously exhibited; and on a particular day in which she is harried, busy speaking on a cellphone and clearly having a bad hair day, it would be obvious that she was a time bomb waiting to explode at the nearest person wearing a badge. Pre-emptive arrest would be not only advisable, but essential to protect her, all police officers within her arm's reach, and the surrounding public. Open and shut case.

Such a program would pay obvious dividends in other areas of Washington as well. I mean, look at how long it has taken the feds to convict Jack Abramoff and a couple of others for engaging in a lengthy and --- to many --- obvious pattern of public corruption. Think how much that investigation has already cost in terms of hours, dollars and effort; and it's not over yet. How much simpler it would have been to simply arrest Abramoff the first time he was spotted plying the halls of Congress in a black trench coat and equally black fedora. Who but a purveyor of corruption would so brazenly wear such an obviously corrupt (and corrupting) outfit in Washington?

38. yes, that Bob Barr
I'm amazed that folks find that so hard to believe.

My best friend has green eyes, and is about Barr's completion.

She is black.

I worked with a black girl who had blonde hair. She told me that when she was a kid, the kids used to taunt her about it. She put shoe polish in her hair to try to change the color, and her hair turned green.

you think all of the race mixing througout the years wouldn't show up somehow?

44. I recall reading some time back
that he stormed out of a speech when asked about his race.

I don't understand why you wouldn't think people still continue this practice.

Blacks passing as white was widely practiced during slavery and following the civil war, into the Jim Crow area.

and it continues today.

i read a story about a man whose father passed him off as Italian. The guy didn't know he had black blood until his child was born black.

and this wasn't very long ago, either.

The Black Congressional Congress always used to send Barr notices of their meetings -- as a half-serious joke. It's been while known for years that Barr is "passing.". His first two wives were black. Before he decided he was white.
But I love his answer when he's been asked straight out about his ancestry.
"I'm not black. I just photograph black."

Edited on Wed Apr-05-06 06:25 PM by bunkerbuster1
http://www.whitehouse.org/news/2003/ex-negro.pdf

We're standing for the truth
that Negroes can change.

A recent gathering of Baptists Invoking God’'s Old Testament Standards, a nationwide Ex-Negro ministry, drew more than 850 people to Pulaski, Tennessee, to proclaim that hope for change is possible for those still struggling with acting like a Negro.

Thousands of former colored people can celebrate a new life because someone cared enough to share with them the truth of God's healing love. Thank you Bob Barr, Clarence Thomas, Alan Keyes and baseball hero John Rocker for having the courage to speak the truth: with Christ'’s love (and the repeal of so-called “nondiscrimination” laws by Congress), Negroes can learn that true happiness will only come when they learn to act like normal people -- us.

With the help of a regular dowsing in peroxide solution.

He's even changed his eye colour.

I wonder if he regrets his betrayal of his ancestry for the sake of those who will just as happily throw him in the garbage yet?

From the bitter tone of this little satire, I'd suspect he does.

Many of us folks who hold McKinney in high esteem are getting a little tired of all this bunk. As much a "panda bear" McCain is kissing RW ass, he has twice the class and character as one each Bob Barr.

I understand your being upset though, after the past few days here with the Cynthia bashing all over the place. When I read the first few lines, I was about to jump all over him also. He's pretty good on civil liberty issues and has been with Al Gore and the ACLU on the Patriot Act issue, eg.

Off topic, but I had no idea he was black ~ I wonder why he would pretend to be otherwise? Sad he feels he has to deny his heritage ~

And hell, consider I'm one of "very few" ... most folks on this thread loved it. So what the hell do I know? <laughing in spite of myself>

BTW I didn't know Barr and McKinney are buds? Perhaps, in a way, you're right, I'm just getting too upset at this whole issue. Point taken.

That's the most interesting thing about this article, to me. Barr seems to be implying that the Capitol Police deliberately targeted her, hoping she'd get angry. I've seen people on DU say this, but it's really telling that a former Congressman like Barr would believe it. By the way, does anyone know why he lost his Congressional seat?

78. His seat was redistricted during that election
so was Cynthia.

Cynthia was upseated, courtesy of Zell Miller.

Can't say the same about Bob.

After reapportionment, Barr decided to run against Linder, an ally of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former head of the National Republican Congressional Committee, instead of running in another Democratic-leaning district that contained much of his old territory.

The new district had more Linder voters than Barr voters. However, many voters were new to both men, and Barr had a fund-raising advantage.

With the two conservative candidates largely agreeing on the major issues, the race became personal. Barr ran ads showing himself as a strapping horse racing across a pasture -- and Linder as a pony. When an antique pistol Barr was handing at the home of a supporter went off accidentally, Linder branded him a "loose cannon." A man dressed as the cartoon character Yosemite Sam then began showing up at Barr's events.

Linder's campaign also put video on its Web site showing Barr supporters pulling down Linder's yard signs.

This whole deal sure deflated the Delay story. I've been sitting here this morning just muttering, "Why the hell are people so damned stupid?"

It's like even Dems can be brainwashed with just a few key words. I saw people pontificate on McKinney's situation on thread after thread, but then those same people had not a word to say about Delay.

Now Delay wants to bring up ethics charges on McKinney? What the hell Bizarro World is this? If this wasn't all so tragic in its implications for our nation, I would laugh.

27. This should be "Late Breaking News": CONSERVATIVE DISCOVERS SARCASM!
Seriously, when is the last time you read a conservative pundit or politician use this kind of satire?

What lengths neocon policy has had to go to get him there, though!

He's not only using sarcasm to make a point about real criminals in Washington like Jack Abramoff, but also to make a point about pre-emptive war and the general erosion in civil liberties becoming more and more prevalent.

Despite Barr's past record, at least he sees now that conservative judges can be at least, if not more, "activist" than liberals. At least he sees that warrantless domestic wire-tapping is clearly illegal. At least he sees the fallacies of Bush's pre-emptive war.

Would that they all similarly wake up.

64. Old George Carlin bit:
Back in the 80's, referring to Reagan's gang:

"...it's called preventive detention...all you have to do is THINK someone's going to commit a crime and you throw them in jail...Well if we'd have known about this shit seven or eight years ago we could have thrown a whole bunch of these republican mother-fuckers directly into prison and saved ourselves the time and expense of prosecuting these country-club, pinheaded assholes."

Lets just dwell on that one, gorgeous phrase for a minute, shall we? Republican mother-fuckers directly into prison. I think I hear a choir.

It may be true that some of us still harbor "raw feelings" on this issue and not so open to satire from a <gasp> republican ... even if he is pro-civil liberties (which is DoublePlusEVIL in Freeper terms).

80. wow! take a deep breath people -- its clearly tongue in cheek
Barr's piece is tongue in cheek, something that really should be obvious to anyone who knows anything about Barr. While he is in many respects the same asshole he was during the Clinton impeachment, he also has become a very outspoken civil libertarian, speaking before and on behalf of the ACLU (he is a member) and very vocally criticizing the Patriot Act. Knowing that, its abundantly clear he's poking fun at those who think preemptive arrests are a good thing.

onenote

93. A republican made a funny
Edited on Wed Apr-05-06 09:31 PM by Jose Diablo
I don't think any republican has anything to laugh about, even IF he WORKS for the ACLU!

Lets be very clear here, the Republican Party has gone far far beyond any reasonableness these last 6 years. From rigging elections, to passing laws that enrich their own pocket books at the expense of us, all of us.

For a republican, any republican, to say anything attempting to make light of what they have done is beyond the pale.

Where was Barr, when that puke Newt got in with his 'contract on America', right there beside him.

No, working for the ACLU is not a pass, not by a long shot. Screw him.

This is satire, it is not "a funny".

Barr is savaging what his own party are doing.

He is pointing out just where his own party's policies can lead, and if any GOP is going to tell the truth for a change, we should encourage them.

I'm not saying he is a good guy, but even a bad guy can ge it right sometimes. ;-)

104. I don't recall saying
Democrats=All Good
Republicans=All Bad

So let's cease with the strawman, 'black and white' and the following ad hominum of calling me naive. What are you trying to set-up, an argument that all politicians are bums, to excuse this batch of Republicans?

I said before, and I'll say it again, Barr doesn't get a pass just because he works for the ACLU. AS far as I'm concerned, his efforts supporting that peckerhead Newt from Kennesaw who in turn crashed the 'Peoples' house and turned it into a love fest of wealthy criminals is more than enough to call Barr out. Then in 2000, where was Barr when the BC went to him to try to get him to sign the petition to not seat the Florida electors until discussion in the Senate could determine if it was true that 50,000 voters, mostly black, had been disenfranchised through Jeb and Harris cooking the voter registrations, throwing the election to Jebs brother. All that started what we see today. So Barr is for the principles the ACLU fights for eh? How about the right to vote, thats something the blacks have fought and died for right here, in the south and Barr just blows that off.

And now I am supposed to think Barr is some kind of funny guy with his lame jokes?

So you and your buddy in the post above can cut the shit of calling me dumb and polar. Then putting forth the Rove talking point of even the Democrats are crooked, 'so why get upset'?

I think you are over your head here, pal.
