Could the Flying Spaghetti Monster become the new Scientology?

On one hand, I love the whole idea of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, especially as a riposte to the "creationist" ignorance that has slowly inched toward taking over science programs in the US. (A propos of that, please read the front page article from Saturday's LA Times on how the children of the ignorants are terrorizing science teachers in their own classrooms.)

On the other hand, Scientology, which started as kind of a joke, has become a real force, and a scary and an ignorant one. Books spread that kind of ignorance, and now that the Flying Spaghetti Monster has its own book, do you think that some unscrupulous types might decide to make it into a real religion?


This may seem like a foolish question, but stranger things (like Scientology) have happened.
