Senator McCain is offering jobs picking lettuce! $50/hr
But you have to work the whole season, not just one day. He doesn't think we can do it.

Senator McCain made a speech to some union leaders and when he threw out the usual right wing mantra about how Americans won't do certain jobs, he made the offer listed above. He got takers, and then insulted them by saying that they couldn't handle it.

I saw the exchange on CNN while standing in line at the bank. I plan to apply. I could use the money.

Is anyone else looking for a temp job for the summer? Ask Senator McCain for a job application.

(Somehow I doubt this was a sincere job offer, but if enough of us try to apply for the positions, he'll have some serious egg on his face. How DARE he insult our work ethic and claim we're being too choosy about living wage jobs when there's so much unemployment around!)

4. You're actually fixing computers?
I used to until my job went visiting other countries. It liked it so much there it hasn't been back.

24. I am bouncing form late adopter to late adopter.
There are still a few of those jobs left on this side of the pond, mostly at places where the in-house employees are "too important" to talk to someone on the phone and need a live body around to come take their floppy disks out of their drives and reboot (law firms, mostly).

5. How long is the season? I'd be willing to take some time off
from work to show him picking lettuce isn't beneath me. I'd quit my job if I know it would be a yearly thing (hell I'll do it for $15, being outside all day beats sitting in my cube staring at a computer, slowing putting on the pounds because I'm much less active)

His comment form wasn't working so I'll have to do this the old fashioned way: Send him my resume snail mail.

8. What an idiot!
Coal Miners work in 3' tunnels in the dark, damp and cold with their lives at risk and risk of black lung, factory workers - complete mundane tasks for hours on end for $10-$20 per hour, Waitresses and Waiters deal with angry cooks, angry customers, carry heavy trays, bus tables for $3.15/hour plus tips and on and on....

and the a-hole doesn't think Americans would pick lettuce for $50 and hour!!!!! How elitist and out of touch!!!!

11. Which is why I think as many people should apply as possible
If we all send him resumes and requests for job applicatins, he may learn something. But then, this is the same guy who hired someone under indictment as chief of staff just a couple weeks ago.

Seriously, it's horrible back-breaking work. I lived in Salinas briefly with their miles and miles of stinky fields.

15. I've found the link on CNN.com
Here it is:

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/04/04/mccain.speech.ap/index.html

You'll have to scroll about 2/3 down to get to this part:

---

McCain responded by saying immigrants were taking jobs nobody else wanted. He offered anybody in the crowd $50 an hour to pick lettuce in Arizona.

Shouts of protest rose from the crowd, with some accepting McCain's job offer.

"I'll take it!" one man shouted.

McCain insisted none of them would do such menial labor for a complete season. "You can't do it, my friends."

Some in the crowd said they didn't appreciate McCain questioning their work ethic.

17. Not only did I email Senator McCain my resume for the position, I also
asked my state Senator to put in a good word for me! There is another thread in on this subject and people have actually figured out the numbers. For a straight 40 hour work week that equals $24,000 for three months work. If you work five hours of OT at $75 an hour that is an EXTRA $18,000. Total for three months work is $42,000. I just hope Senator McCain can line me up another $50 an hour job for the rest of the year! $96,000 a year isn't bad money and if I can get my husband to do it with me we can pay off all our debts in one year and STILL live like kings!

20. Eh, he's my senator. Sent him this:
Dear Sen. McCaine,

Can you please send me an employment application for the jobs picking lettuce for $50 per hour.

I am a U.S. citizen. We have a very long history of planting, tending and harvesting melons, corn, cotton, tomatoes, wheat, potatoes, tobacco, oranges, strawberries, squash, almonds, walnuts, carrots, apples, grapes, turnips, cucumbers, blueberries, rice, grapefruit, celery, radishes, plums, peaches, pears, broccoli, peas, and many, many other crops. We have raised and tended herds and flocks, and know how to fish the seas.

We also know how to repair farm and ranch machinery; how to clean, process and can foods. We can prune and irrigate. We can build cars and vacuums. We even know how to mow lawns, rake leaves, mop floors, clean toilets, paint walls, apply roofing, take bridge tolls, frame buildings, dig ditches, build ships and boats, lay pipes and make bread. We can care for patients in care-facilities and we even know how to pick lettuce... and are willing to do any job at a fair wage.

Surely you did not mean to say that U.S. citizens are lazy, useless do-nothings, unworthy of employment? If so, why would you care to represent us?

We are Americans and know how to work hard.

All we want is a fair and decent living wage so that we can support ourselves and our families.

Unless you think we are worthless do-nothings, I would expect you to stand up for the American worker.

If you cannot stand up for us, step down.

several people took him up on it.

But then, jobs that pay good wages are too good for us uppity American workers. :sarcasm:
