I doubt if these mining families will take too kindly to this whack job.

2. Mr. Phelps could use an ass-whooping from some miners
I think it would do him a world of good

3. this man and his family needed to be locked away

where they can't be seen nor heard from ever again. I am sorry but the right to free speech does not apply to people who preach this kind of hatred.

6. I beg to differ
This guy is exactly the test we need for the first amendment. Here is a man who is so vile in his statements and protests, but we can not allow ourselves to make him a martyr for free speech.

8. He might make himself
a martyr to other bigots. But someone who harasses grieving blue collar people, who own and use guns. . . a free speech martyr ? Never. He'd just get himself a nice little Darwin award for committing a grand act of stupidity.

17. He doesn't qualify for the Darwin award. He's already spawned.
Darwin award if for people who take themselves out of the gene pool. Too late.

20. Exactly
If you read the post I responded to, the statement was made that Fred Phelps should be "locked up".

4. this is outrageous even for fred. Bet he won't show up, though.
Edited on Mon Jan-09-06 12:18 AM by MnFats
..
within the past few months he caused consternation in both Eden Prairie, Mn. and Fargo N.D. by threatening to show up and protest....
he threatened to picket Eden Prairie HIgh School's graduation because the school was 'a fag enabler' by allowing a gay-straight alliance group to meet there.

He pissed everybody off and counterdemonstrations were planned...and some counterdemonstrators turned up, but not Fred. He just stayed home and reaped the benefits of a ton of free publicity.

He's a fucking publicity hound and the media usually cooperates.

I'm willing to bet he won't show up in W.Va.
He must know how pissed off those people are, and that a lot of them keep guns in their pickups.

that I hope he shows, and that some miners get so angry that they rid us of him and his entire wretched clan ?

9. I don't get it. Why does a flaming homphobe hate these dead miners?
Why?

Were they all gay?

What?

I do not understand.

11. Phelps' basic ideology:
America is being punished because homosexuality is not a capital offense.

Anyway, when Jerry Falwell refers to you as a "wacko," as he referred to the Phelps people, then you know you're majorly messed up.

10. Please go Fred & Company
Edited on Mon Jan-09-06 01:17 AM by Botany

Buckhannon is about 25 miles east of I 79

The town of Tallmansville is about 5 miles South of Buckhannon (follow river) and
about 1 to 2 miles due east (up into the hills) at the end of a dead end road.

Please go there Fred and disrupt a miner's burial ...... you better pray that
State Troopers are there because I guarantee that the local sheriff and his
men will not see a thing.

I know that area ..... those Good ol' Boys will not mess around.

13. Here in WV, we have something called
a "Fighting Words" statute. Some other southern and western states may still have them, too.

Someone needs to let Southern Baptist-ordained Reverend Fred know about this.

The upshot of the statute is that some words are so vile, so offensive that they have the legal equivalent of a physical blow, and may be responded to as such.

There's another old legal doctrine that comes into play, too. It's called "Assumption of the Risk," which is what his people are doing if they go to that service.

Reminds me of that scene from the movie version of "The Untouchables," where Robert DeNiro asks "You like baseball? I like baseball! <WHACK!>"

14. Phelps is delusional.
He must obviously think that everyone other than himself and his followers are "immoral queers" or "queer enablers.":eyes:

16. I think Fred Phelps is crazy
I really think Fred Phelps is at least a little bit insane. His whole shtick is so vile and so far from rational, that insanity is the only way I can explain it to myself.

So I don't think it's a free speech issue... unless we're supposed to hand over microphones and put a spotlight on people who are totally nuts, and tell them "Go ahead, you have the floor".

19. I wonder if the WV papers have been notified of this stance . . .
I wonder how the "liberal media" would take Phelps' rantings in that neck of the woods . . .

(I'm not giving them the satisfaction of a click).

Maybe the WV papers should be informed of what Phelps has to say . . .
