Belafonte Calls Bush 'Greatest Terrorist'
By IAN JAMES, Associated Press Writer
Sunday, January 8, 2006

(01-08) 19:55 PST CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) --

The American singer and activist Harry Belafonte called President Bush "the greatest terrorist in the world" on Sunday and said millions of Americans support the socialist revolution of Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez.

Belafonte led a delegation of Americans including the actor Danny Glover and the Princeton University scholar Cornel West that met the Venezuelan president for more than six hours late Saturday. Some in the group attended Chavez's television and radio broadcast Sunday.

"No matter what the greatest tyrant in the world, the greatest terrorist in the world, George W. Bush says, we're here to tell you: Not hundreds, not thousands, but millions of the American people ... support your revolution," Belafonte told Chavez during the broadcast.

The 78-year-old Belafonte, famous for his calypso-inspired music, including the "Day-O" song, was a close collaborator of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and is now a UNICEF goodwill ambassador. He also has been outspoken in criticizing the U.S. embargo of Cuba.

1. Prepare for freeper bonfires.
Conservatives in the bible belt will be searching their attics for old RCA Victor Belafonte 45s and LPs. Hint: Avoid the old 78s of "Day-O" - too much slate/not enough shellac. Hint no. #2: His CDs will do nothing to enhance the flames - better to toss them in the dumpster (albeit less freeper vengance/hatred satisfaction). Oh, and be sure to call the press for coverage in the local rag.

5. Those backward doofuses wouldn't have a Belefonte recording anyway.
He said that Powel was bush**s houseboy.

They don't have a clue who Harry Belefonte is. They'll only know Danny Glover because of his working with Mel Gibson in those Die Hard (??) movies. (Those are the right ones, aren't they? I'm not a Gibson fan.)

9. That reminds me
of when there were "burn the Beatles" bonfires after John's comments on Christianity were reported in the US. I think it was Paul who said, "As long as they are buying the records before they burn them, it's okay."

Harry has always spoken his mind. And I think that he speaks for a large segment of American society.

all those Beatles LPs and 45s they tossed into those bonfires are now selling for big bucks on eBay.

15. What else do you call "Mushroom Clouds...in 45 Minutes"
It was the MOST HEINOUS ACT OF TERRORISM IN HISTORY when they falsely threatened the American People with "mushroom clouds in 45 minutes."

Anything 20 guys with boxcutters could do pales in comparison. Even a "dirty bomb" is less threatening.

The **PNACons' "bomb threat" on our nation was only perpetrated to advance their own ideological and profiteering wet-dreams.

Terrorizing our (once great) nation for whatever reason is far worse than Watergate, worse than Iran/contra, worse than pardoning co-conspirators to obstruct justice.

And we need to join with Harry Belafonte and say so. Loudly.

And refuse to shut up until full punishment is exacted.

16. I don't think that George Bush is a man of honor
http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/h/harry_belafonte.html

I don't think that George Bush is a man of honor.
Harry Belafonte

I not only think that they are misguided, but I think they know exactly what they are doing, and I think that they are men who are possessed of evil.
Harry Belafonte

I think Bush has a very selfish, arrogant point of view. I think he is interested in power, I think he believes his truth is the only truth, and that he will do what he wants to do despite the people.
Harry Belafonte

I think that they are men who are possessed of evil.
Harry Belafonte

You can cage the singer but not the song.

I wonder why nobody don't like me
Or is it the fact that I'm ugly?
I wonder why nobody don't like me
Or is it the fact that I'm ugly?

I leave my whole house and home
My children don't want me no more
Bad talk inside de house dey bring
And when I talk they start to sing

"Mama, look at bubu" they shout
Their mother tell them "shut up your mout' "
"That is your daddy", "oh, no"
"My daddy can't be ugly so"
"Shut your mout' " "Go away"

"Mama, look at bubu" dey (ooh)
"Shut your mout' " "Go away"
"Mama, look at bubu" dey

I couldn't even digest me supper
Due to thee children's behavior
John ("Yes, pa")-"come here a moment"
"Bring de belt, you're much too impudent"
John says it's James who started first
James tells thee story in reverse
I drag my belt from off me waist
You should hear dem screamin' round de place

"Mama, look at bubu" they shout
Their mother tell them "shut up your mout' "
"That is your daddy", "oh, no"

27. Bob Dylan said of Harry Belafonte:
"He could play to a packed house at Carnegie Hall and then the next day he might appear at a garment center union rally. To Harry, it didn’t make any difference. People were people. He had ideals and made you feel you’re a part of the human race. There never was a performer who crossed so many lines as Harry. He appealed to everybody, whether they were steelworkers or symphony patrons or bobby-soxers, even children- everybody. He had that rare ability.
....Somewhere he had said that he didn’t like to go on television, because he didn’t’ think his music could be represented well on a small screen, and he was probably right. Everything about him was gigantic. The folk purists had a problem with him, but Harry - who could have kicked the shit out of all of them - couldn’t be bothered, said that all folk singers were interpreters, said it in a public way as is if someone had summoned him to set the record straight.
.....Astoundingly and as unbelievable as it might have seemed, I’d be making my professional recording debut with Harry, playing harmonica on one of his albums called “Midnight Special”. Strangely enough, this was the only one memorable recording date that would stand out in my mind for years to come. Even my own sessions would become lost in abstractions. With Belafonte I felt like I’d become anointed in some kind of way. He did the same thing for me that Gorgeous George did. Harry was that rare type of character that radiates greatness, and you hope that some of it rubs off on you. The man commands respect. You know he never took the easy path, though he could have."

Delegation of Prominent U.S. Progressive Leaders Visits Venezuela

Sunday, Jan 08, 2006
By: Gregory Wilpert – Venezuelanalysis.com

Caracas, Venezuela, January 7, 2006—The singer, actor, and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte visited Venezuela this week, leading a delegation of 13 other prominent activists from the U.S. During their visit, the delegation toured the complex of cooperatives, known as the Endogenous Development Nucleus Fabricio Ojeda, visited with ministers, Venezuelan community leaders, opposition leaders, and Venezuela's President Chavez.

“I would hope the people of Venezuela will take a good look at our visit and truly believe that we come with no agenda and come with no conclusion in hand and we’ve come to learn and to be touched by those who care to reach out to us and inform us,” said Harry Belafonte during the delegation’s press conference on Thursday.

Belafonte explained that the purpose of their visit was to see with their own eyes, how Venezuela handles its affairs, with the hope that it could, “become a role model for the rest of Latin America and others in the world.”

Other members of the delegation included Princeton theology and social history professor Cornell West. West emphasized that visits such as those of the delegation are necessary because, “We in the United States have so many lies about President Hugo Chavez and the Bolivarian Revolution.”

Dolores Huerta, the long-time farm workers’ organizer, who worked closely together with the Latino union organizer Cesar Chavez in the U.S., said that her visit to Venezuela would help inspire organizing efforts in the U.S. “We are inspired by what is happening here. The revolution here is electoral. It has inspired us to take these lessons to our country and to inspire our people too,” said Huerta.

Another delegation member, Malia Lazu of the group Hip Hop Coalition, which organizes youth in the U.S., said that she could tell that the government has turned over power to Venezuelan poor. “Here in this country, for the few days I have been here, I have been able to see what happens when you give power to the people,” said Lazu. For her, the struggle of Venezuelans for greater social justice, “has breathed life into our .”
