I just don't get it. There are 100,000 living in group homes in the foster care stem. HOW can anyone rally believe that moving from home to home or living in a group home is 'better' for the child than 2 loving parents regardless of whether they are gay or straight?

that such a thing could be subject to referenda, and more so that politicians are willing to do this at the expense of children.

What's frightening is that people who might not initially be opposed to such a thing (such as my parents or members of their church, just for one example) can so easily be whipped up into a frenzy by their churches, JUST LIKE what happened with same-sex marriage, and become convinced that all the evil liberal gays are going to adopt children and indoctrinate them into the "gay lifestyle." So they'll turn out in droves to protect some sort of godly standard that never existed in the first place, and neglect everything else at issue.

I hope we are prepared to deal with this. I wish I knew what to do. In my state, I'm afraid it's a lost cause, although it's not on the ballot, surprisingly.

5. Pretty soon they'll be after gays owning pets

They're running out of all the "serious" gay-rights issues, as if those issues would be of any import whatsoever if the fundies didn't need a little boost in voter turnout now and again.

Personally, I think in another generation or two we'll see quite a radical shift in people's attitudes towards gays and lesbians. Kids today are a lot more savvy than we sometimes give them credit for.

6. Ooh I totally agree with you on the attitudes thing.

I teach freshman comp in a red, red state, and lots of my students are from OK and TX. All but the MOST fundie of them don't even get what the big deal is about gay marriage. I mean, they "get" it, in that they know why people oppose it, but they don't buy into the fundie arguments, even those that come from their own parents and churches. A lot of them have gay friends, which I think helps a lot. They really don't think it's a problem. That gives me a LOT of hope, and I agree with you.

8. I spend a lot of time petitioning on my college campus

They have friends of all races, inter-racial dating, have no problem with the whole 'gay' thing. IF we can survive I have a lot of hope for that generation.

They'll come up with dozens of reasons. None of them will make any sense, but they'll have plenty of them.
