A story I would like to hear... |
|
How did George W Bush get the Republican nomination in 2000? Surely there were better Republicans running for the office? He was short-time Governor of Texas, which had very weak executive responsibilities. He swamped his primary opponents and went on to steal the election in Florida and the White House. But, how did he do it? He had more money than anybody and he had Karl Rove and the propaganda machine. Is that all he needed to hornswoggle the Republican voters?

1. I recall that they went after the donor money early. |
|
That left the usual sources drained by the time the other candidates made their moves. That allowed him to swamp others more easily.
Came clear around March. That's when the stock market glitched.

He had a servant media in Texas, too. I went there a couple of years before 2000 and they were practically fawning over him. The report at the time called him 'the only real candidate for the GOP Primaries in 2000, our own GWB'. I didn't even know who the heck he was at the time!
