Anyone watch Dr Who last night?
The aliens took over the bodies of England's Prime minister and top officials who then attempted to convince the world that the invading aliens had their mother-ship parked directly over Britain and could deploy "weapons of destruction" in 45 seconds. The PM advocated that the UN grant a resolution allowing a preemptive nuclear strike against the non-existent "weapons of destruction". That would touch off a full-on nuclear exchange and destroy the planet which of course was the aliens' goal. Their motivation? Why energy of course! They could sell the radio-active chucks of Earth around the galaxy for huge profits.

One lone Member of Parliament--clearly someone who might call Christopher Hitchens a "drink sodden popinjay"--was trying to get the word out that there were no "weapons of destruction".

Fortunately the good Dr was able to hack into a submarine's computer--he is a Time Lord and they can can do stuff like that--and lob a missile into #10 Downing St killing the aliens and saving the world allowing cooler heads to prevail.

The episode was called "World War III", but it should've been "Downing Street Memo".

1. The only Dr Who I am familiar with is on Discovery Medical Channel
and he would NEVER bomb ANYTHING! I guess you are Canadian and the show must be from Britan, since its focus was on 10 Downing Street and not the White House?

Sorry, I am on dailup and downloading a program, so it was all I could do to even respond, much less check out your profile.

2. Canada? Not with that Cali flag avatar. Dr Who is on the Sci-Fi Channel

Dr Who is a Brit show which aired its first episode in 1963 making it the longest-running science fiction tv series ever.

The Dr's arch-enemies, the Daleks, return next week. Although they made their first appearance in late '63, they are the perfect metaphor for the * administration; Daleks delight in the annihilation of life forms they consider inferior to themselves and they get so excited about death and destruction that they just spin in circles and usually screw up their plans to extort whatever resource from whatever planet for profit.

3. That new series sure makes me miss the original
They have the dr being very nasty to
his sidekick's boyfriend.
Very very unbecoming behavior.
And the actor playing the dr just does
not cut it.
What a let down.

5. I disagree. I think it captures a lot of the original
and pulls the show back toward that. Over the years, I thought the Dr had become somewhat clownish and the aliens more reminiscent of Lost in Space.

I like the new guy; the Dr never was a warm, empathetic kinda guy. In fact I was kind of surprised that he openly expressed feelings for the girl.

I really like the new show, the (almost) original theme music, the original sound effect for the TARDIS, and the Dr's character pulls a lot of the original Dr's personality into the current time (Lord) frame.

13. I like the new show too
and there hasn't been that kind of sexual tension between the Dr. and a companion since Tom Baker and Romana II.

I missed the first half of yesterday's episode, due to work. I need to get my priorities straight.

6. You are probably right
but I'd be willing to bet when it first aired in the UK, those references weren't missed. I'm anxious to see if they do in fact parallel the Daleks with the * administration.

12. I noticed the references to the Iraq scam.
I thought they were quite pointed. I like the slightly acidic Dr Who.

I also liked this episode's goofy costumes. It reminded me of the "good ol' days" before the Dr got a budget.
