Hist.Ch's "The Presidents" - Shrub's predecessors cast pall on him |
|
Remember the fad for the ADAMSes because of the father-&-son presidents, which was supposed to allude to Poppy & Shrub? Well, John Q. took power with the same kind of cloud. None of the four candidates had a majority of the Electoral votes, so it went to the House of Reps. The 4th was cast off and the 3rd had a stroke, so it came down to frontrunner JACKSON and 2nd place John Q. However, John C. CALHOUN was Speaker of the House and it was suspected an under-the-table deal was cut, since John Q. "won" and appointed CALHOUN as Secty of State. JACKSON screamed bloody murder (so analogies fail?). And Q. had trouble shaking the cloud over his power grab.
And Franklin PIERCE, Shrub's non-linear relative, was a heavy boozer before and after his term, although he had something of an excuse, having lost 3 children, the last soon after taking office, in a train wreck that took the top of the child's head off in front of his eyes. But he "entered office liked by everyone and left despised by everyone."
There was an annoying reference to Shrub in the WASHINGTON segment. Refering to what an athlete he was, how he flashed a white horse, the narrator intoned, "It was his version of a tailhook landing," while a clip of the infamous carrier landing rolled. Barf.

I'm watching "The Presidents" too. I don't really know why, because I have it on DVD, and I've watched it several times. But anyway, comparing them to the idiot-in-chief, I would have to say that he is without a doubt the worst ever and we've had some bad ones. If there is ever a presidential Hall of Shame, Bush will be its first inductee. Is it January 20, 2009, yet? :grr:
