History is bearing down on George W. Bush, and we all suffer from his

failures, which have been numerous and pervasive in all aspects of national life.

His poll numbers are in the tank and his place in history seems assured as the president who lied the country into a disastrous war in which many men, women and children, including Iraqi citizens, were wounded or killed.

Bush is famous for resisting change, but GOP graybeards will reach Jim Baker, and an attempt to save the trainwreck will ensue.

I hate Jim Baker. He's a fixer and a Machiavellian election thief. But he at least knows how to manage better than Dubya and Uncle Dick.

John Warner, Richard Lugar, and Pete Domenici meet privately with Baker and a deal is struck: Lugar (For. Rel. Committee, Warner (Armed Svcs.) and Domenici (Finance expert) agree to force Dubya to can Cheney, who, all agree, has been a devious lizard and a drag on the party and the nation. If Dubya balks, Warner, Lugar, and Domenici withdraw their support for the war, and Bush can forget about Iran.

Cheney doesn't like it, but he steps down for "health reasons," and Baker begins internal management that attempts to bring things to a better balance. He orchestrates the transfer of Condiliar to the vice presidency, with all the subsequent media hullabaloo.

Next Baker fires Karl Rove. Rove can be shipped off to the national GOP organization to work his evil over there. Baker himself assumes Rove's role as both advisor and assist. chief of staff with Josh Bolten.

McClellan is fired and replaced with Andrea Koppel. No one misses him.

As part of Lugar/Warner/Domenici's deal, Lugar gets Condi's job at State. Snow is sacked and Domenici gets his job. Rumsfeld is sacked and Warner gets that post.

After the new staff is settled in, Dubya announces that beginning June 1, he will open a Delta White House in the heart of New Orleans' 9th ward and conduct the business of government from there 3 or 4 days a week. He announces that the city will be "substantially rebuilt" in 12 months and calls on corporations world-wide to donate money, time, and personnel. On at least one of those days every 2 weeks in New Orleans, he and several highprofile Republicans will join Habitat for Humanity and other rescue and charity organizations to rebuild the city.

I'm not saying this will happen. I'm not even saying there's a fair-to-middlin' chance it will ever happen. I'm saying that I think it's Dubya's best shot at redeeming his presidency.

Bombing the crap out of Iran just isn't going to cut it.

He's exhausted our military, our economy, our world standing. So where is he going?

You are operating on the principle that Dubya WANTS to redeem his presidency. I do not believe he does. If anything he probably thinks a new preemptive war (Iran) will add to his glory ("I'm a War-President"). Let us hope that the Republican elders DO step in but I'm not holding my breath. Only thing that will move them to action is if they think their gravy-train is going to dry up. Money flowing one-way means more to them than power. And Baker makes Machiavelli look like Shirley Temple.

4. We're in fierce agreement on Jim Baker. I shouldn't have slandered

Machiavelli in my original post.

I posted the admitedly far-flung scenario only because I hold Lugar/Warner et al significantly accountable for allowing the Bushes to steal their party away from them, and beyond that level, to disgrace the entire nation.

I don't like being judged by the actions of a crazy-ass psycho like Don Rumsfeld. I don't like being likened to those idiot Congressmen who emptied French wine bottles into the street gutter. I don't like being considered an oil-mad consumptionist who cares about my own comfort at the expense of world peace and economic democracy, etc.

Yet as you accurately indicate, Bush has brought us to that point.

I want SOMEBODY in that damn party to intervene and restore a semblance of dignity to government, so I used 3 stalwarts from different parts of the electoral map, each with skills Dubya nd his team have probably ignored for 1 and a half terms.

5. Two big reasons that this won't happen --

John Warner and Pete Domenici are from states with Democratic governors. If they take over as Secretaries of Defense and Treasury, there will be two new Democratic senators, and we will only have to win four seats in the 2006 elections to take over the Senate.

6. True, but the point I was going for was that elders in the GOP are

also to blame for what's gone wrong because they brought no pressure to bear to stop it, and now they must assume the role of elder "parent" and step in to restore public service to the people's White House.

I stated that I didn't think it would happen. My point was that the graybeards in the GOP are that party's only chance to redeem a failed presidency.
