More than anyone else, Bill Clinton owes his election victory in 1992 to Ross Perot. Ross brought the huge deficits to the people's attention. Bush Sr had the largest deficits in human history up to that point, since bypassed by his idiot son, George Jr. But the people were rightfully concerned about the deficits in 1992.

If Ross could come back and give his message once more, I think it would be good for our country. Because, at this time, everyone seems to believe that "deficits don't matter". But they do matter. The "percent of GDP" argument is a false argument built on false premises. The assumption being that the wealth of the country, individuals, belongs to the US government. It does not. Government is only as solvent as to the extent that the people will fund it. Government cannot say that all the wealth in the country is at its disposal.

But, as much as anything, it was was the people's fear of the huge deficits that led to the defeat of Bush Sr in 1992. They were convinced by Ross Perot. It would be ironic indeed, and justified, if Bush Jr and the Republicans were defeated by the same issue in 2008.
