Specter Urges Bush, Cheney to Detail Iraq Disclosures

April 9 (Bloomberg) -- A senior Republican U.S. senator said President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney owe the public a ``specific explanation'' of their involvement in disclosing classified information to rebut Iraq war critics.

``It is necessary for the president and the vice president to tell the American people exactly what happened,'' Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter said on the ``Fox News Sunday'' program. Bush may have had authority to declassify intelligence material ``but that was not the right way to go about it because we ought not to have leaks in government.''

Another ranking Republican lawmaker, House Majority Leader John Boehner, declined to defend the administration's leaking of information in 2003, saying, ``I don't have the facts.''

Cheney's former chief of staff, I. Lewis Libby, testified to a grand jury that the vice president told him Bush authorized the disclosure of information from a classified intelligence report on Iraq's attempts to gain nuclear weapons when the administration's rationale for going to war was being questioned, documents filed in federal court last week say.

people. We all know that the truth isn't going to "clear things up." Specter wants an Oval Office speech that gives a lie that he can stand behind because it was solemnly made with all the CinC fixings. He's asking Bush to put them all on the same page so they can bury it and move on. That's all.

2. Harry Reid has Specter's number

Harry knows his picks

Sen. Harry Reid, the Democratic leader, makes no bones about disliking most of his GOP colleagues. "Republicans in the Senate," he says, "do not represent mainstream Republicans in this country. Mainstream Republicans in this country are more moderate and more thoughtful than the people I work with who are in the majority in the Senate." Ouch. Well, of the 55 GOP-ers, he's gotta like a few, right? "Someone asked me the other day," he says, "'Who are the moderate Republicans?' Hmm. Well, you've got Lincoln Chafee , sometimes the two senators from Maine < Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins>, and Arlen Specter whenever you don't need him. That's it." Double ouch.

Now if Our Dear Harry will just act on that awareness with a bit more Deanish enthusiasm........

before Cheney comes clean with the Americans. The statement is so laughable.

This creep didn't even apologize after shooting his friend in the face with buckshot.

If he won't apologize to his friend, why would he apologize to his sworn enemies, the American people?
