Back from my trip to D.C., and I caused Justice Antonin Scalia to flip out
Hey follow DUers, I'm back from my University's Political Science Club's Washington D.C. trip, and the highlight of my trip was that my question to Justice Scalia caused him to flip out. We were down there from Wednesday April 5th to Saturday April 8th. And on Friday we met with Justice Scalia, for a private Q & A session, and my question made him flip out and really really mad. My question was "What is your defination of conflict of interest, because I have a hard time seeing that you have one", he then asked me why I said that, and I responded that there have been many cases that you were asked to recuse yourself from, due to possible conflicts of interest. He then asked me to named the cases, I first named both the cheney energy task force case, and the Hamdin case, and gave the reasons why. By this time he started to get all red in the face & mad, and gave some BS reasons why he didn't recuse himself from the cases. And asked me to name another case, so I named Bush v. Gore, and the fact that two of his sons were on the Bush legal team during the litigation phase, at this time my professor looked at me and told me to stop, but I proceeded, Scalia then really flipped out, and gave another BS excuse, and that called me "ignorant" and said that I "had alot of audacity to ask such a question". He was so pissed, and just flipped out, it was funny. He tried to walk out of the room as fast as could but was stopped because he promised before hand to take a group photo with us (I stood as far away as possible from him in the photo) after which he was out of the room in the flash. Afterwards my professor pulled me aside, told what I did was uncalled for, and that it wasn't funny(I was laughing)even serveral of the other students went up to me and told me that they thought how Scalia was acting towards me was rude, and uncalled, especially since he's Supreme Court Justice. I know on Monday, I will be in some sort of trouble, but I really don't care, I was the civil one, Scalia was the jerk who was getting nasty towards me and flipped out over a question. It was well worthg seeing that asshole flip out.

because we all know how petty, mean and vindictive right wingers are.

However, Scalia's days are numbered. He's disinhibited and that speaks ill of his mental status. Eventually more and more people will notice and he'll be forced to retire to spend more time with his family.

The right wing's day in the sun is just about over, too.

I doubt the repercussions will be great or last more than a few short years.

Ya did great, kiddo, and will be a credit to your profession.

THIS THREAD proves retaliation, absent actually deserved bad scores on whatever. I doubt that will happen...especially if this thread somehow ends up in the professor's mailbox.

I don't mean email. Someone should let him know the old-fashioned way, so it's less likely to be traced. I'd send it myself if I knew his address...

If so, Hi, Prof. Our eyes are upon you and will remain so for the rest of the semester.

-Love and kisses, kgfnally

As to the temper tantrum, Scalia asked for it by asking for a third incident. I was just talking about this with someone here- Scalia demostrated total dipshittedness when he asked for the third example. Any of us, as we're all aware, would naturally stop and move on to another topic were someone to catch us red-handed in not one but two examples, but nooooo... Scalia had to be Mr. Superior Appellate District Local Supreme Court Judge, and ask for a third case. Good for DemGirl!! Excellent trap.

It was, predictably, the most damning example of all. I submit, however, that it was discussion here of what question to ask that had a hand in making this a closed event. This is, after all, a public board... and they very definitely know about us. Hi, Tony! Hope you had fun this afternoon!

Seriously, this is cool. DemGirl deserves a  and a

scalia has written a large page in the history books because of his controversies not you.

this was a prime educational opportunity and you did precisely what any intelligent student would and should do -- if they want to get the most out of their education.

Although not an excuse, those who were raised in the generation that produced people now in their late 50s, 60s, and older were taught from birth to be differential to authority.

It's so cool when the public can get at these people and show them that WE KNOW the shit they are up too and we're not going to let them get away with it.

Having solid fact and figures or specific examples like you did is how we do it.

History will show you were anything but "ignorant" and some current events sources outside the MSM will see you as the new brand of everyday hero - a person who stands up and speaks the truth.

Good for you.

Now be prepared again. Monday when you go to school, bring a lawyer. You have a right to free speech and you shouldn't be persecuted for it. If you are, pretend you are a Republican and sue their asses off.

He probably thought that you wouldn't be nearly as informed as you were and that when he asked "what cases?" you'd stumble. When your professor scolds you, just say "he shouldn't have asked if he didn't want an answer!"

48. Your poly sci prof doesn't believe the gov't is accountable to citizens?
The purpose of such jaunts is to visit powerful folks in gov't and genuflect before them for the "honor" of being allowed in their presence?

You asked legit questions. Wasn't like you were mooning him or anything. You didn't even ask him to expand on his comments about the health benefits of orgies and if he had any personal anectdotes or techniques he'd care to share. ;)

Scalia didn't shout "this is off the record?" as he stormed out of the room? Damn, I'm disappointed. hee.

What would your prof consider "called for" questions? "What's your favorite color?" "Do you like broccoli?" "Aren't you a bit nervous when you go hunting with Dick Cheney?"

54. why shouldn't you ask those questions?
is it really the first time Scalia's had to answer them? If so, what does that say about how much time he spent considering the matter before deciding not to recuse himself? If not, what does it say about his reserve and self-control, that he can so easily be unhinged by a question he's probably been asked any number of times? If he made the the right decision and knows it, why can't he explain his position, clearly and calmly. His reaction and your professor's reaction, makes it sound like Scalia was in the wrong and all three of you knew it but only one of you was willing to acknowledge it.

Kissinger when I was in high school. I repeated my question (about getting out of Vietnam) a couple of times because he was skipping around not really answering it. Then my embarrassed classmates tried to shush me. But my teacher then restated my question.

He never answered it, of course. I left there impressed not so much with his mind as with his amazing case of dandruff.

93. Well and boldly done (and an upraised-fist salute!). But be sure...
to contact the American Civil Liberties Union as soon as possible, as I would anticipate serious reprisals, particularly since your professor seems to either side with the fascists (or to be so terrified of Guantanamo-type confinement he would readily rat you out). Thus an ACLU contact made in advance would help ensure your continued ability to resist. Also -- speaking as a long-ago radical activist -- it might be a very good idea for the next few months to make certain you are either always accompanied by (or in close contact with) trusted friends. Do NOT underestimate this regime's ever-increasing penchant for viciousness.

Which is precisely why I so emphatically salute you. I say again: well and boldly done.

I don't know if you ever heard of it, it's the State University of New York at New Paltz. I was surpried that my professor acted the way he did, because he is liberal in his political opinions, I just think he wanted the school not to look bad, since there are a few students from my university that are interning at the Supreme Court (who were there in the room at the time this all happened and saw Scalia flip out).

110. If your school gives you grief, just keep repeating "ACADEMIC FREEDOM"
I have no doubt that Scalia will be raising hell with the the people at the top of your university - probably the President, or the Chairman of the Board of Governors, who will in turn drag your Dean into the situation and then your professor. You must be going to a school with some special pull to get the private audience with that piss poor (in my professional opinion as a lawyer and former law school professor) excuse for a SC Justice. Was it Scalia's alma mater by any chance? So whoever at your school had the pull to set up a private audience, will have immediately been contacted by an enraged Scalia. I think you have two strong defenses. The first one is Academic Freedom, a concept which barely survived Joe McCarthy. The other is Scalia's own scandalous behavior. Since he is has a lifetime appointment, only a rare few people get the opportunity to throw factual criticisms at him, and you did a service to the whole country with your questioning. Then go on the offensive and suggest that in the future, if the school wants to set up meetings with judges, that they choose one who is not in the habit of flipping off the free press. Please let us know the fallout on Monday, and stand tall - we've got your back!

I've seen him in question session on c-span and he is usually rude, arrogant and dismissive right away if he doesn't like the question.

Great that you were prepared. He probably bothered to ask because he thought you couldn't answer.

No one has to be a psych major to see that this man has issues when he is challenged at all. When I have seen him blow people off I couldn't believe this was a judge on SCOTUS acting that way. I couldn't believe any professional would act that way but considering his position if he can't maintain his composure and some decorum that is all the scarier.

I can see you'd be nervous but good for you. I wish he had answered your question because I wonder what the hell he considers a conflict of interest too.

Were you the only one he was rude in response to? Maybe you were the only one that asked a challenging question. Wish that one had been taped. Having seen him I understand why he usually won't allow himself taped.

185. I hope your professor backs off ...
... because you asked a question and were invited to follow up, more than once. If the professor wasn't comfortable with that, I'd guess he wasn't swift enough / knowledgable enough to respond as you did (I wouldn't have been that prepared, or swift), or he buys into the notion that you shouldn't question "authority." Or his personal politics would preclude him from asking those sorts of direct, honest questions of a rethug.

Should anyone ask, tell them the truth -- that you'll be writing up your entire experience for publication. You want to get the quotes right.

You can honestly tell them you've got thousands of "blog readers" waiting for your next installment.

People tend to get more polite when they know they're on the record. Except Scalia of course.

innocent. he might have spoken down to you, all smiles, calmly explaining the reality in tones that could scarcely fail to have been immensely patronising; deighted to have set the record straight. I'd almost certainly have messed up something like that, had I tried to say what Demgirl7 did, but it would have been good also, if she'd asked him why he considered her question to be audacious. Did he not feel a sense of responsibility, even duty to enlighten young students where he thought they were mistaken?

Brilliant work, Demgirl7! His reaction was more eleoquent than anyone could have expected in their wildest dreams. Well, apart from the fact that it was par the course for those surreal hirelings.

203. Thanks for making my day
It's very disheartening sometimes to see all the bad news here, and everywhere for that matter.

I got a nice mental picture of Scumbaglia going red in the face. I'm surprised he didn't make his little up your's gesture.

What you did was just wonderful. It shows exactly what happens when a pompous gasbag like Scalia is confronted with the truth.

Let us know if you have any further difficulty with your professor. We'll at least give you moral support.

Thanks for speaking up the way you did!

Wow, you really made the most of your opportunity. I love it that you were prepared and ready to cite examples of Scalia's conflicts of interest with no hesitation when he challenged you. What could he do in response but blubber and fume?

Best of all, your act is sure to have long-lasting influence on your peers who were there to witness it.

I'm so glad that somebody like you (you, in fact, not just somebody like you!) is on the cusp of professional life. Whatever you decide to do after graduation, I'm sure you will be a formidable force for positive change.

I can picture reporters following him around, asking inconvenient questions, and showing the result on "Entertainment Tonight" or whatever is on the air these days (I dumped my TV months ago in disgust).

215. You did good, DemGirl! And anyone (including your professor)
who says that was uncalled for is just dead wrong. What could possibly be wrong with asking legitimate questions? Scalia feels he's above being held to account and as long as you were respectful, then you have every right to ask a question regarding your government and those who propose to represent the people.

235. Who the hell does he think he is?!
Dammit, WE THE PEOPLE pay his salary. We are his employers. We are entitled to call him to account on his actions. It is "audacity" to ask him for his reasoning in not recusing himself on cases where there is an apparent conflict of interest?! Does he truly believe he is above the law?

When did we fall into this nonsense of venerating public servants such that their actions and decisions may not be questioned? What the hell country IS this, anyway?!

Good on you, DemGirl. He's an uncivilized, arrogant boor, unethical and ill-mannered. It's high time someone called him on the carpet.

Oh, and I'd really like to know what questions your professor would have thought were appropriate. I see absolutely nothing wrong with the questions you asked.

246. Move to the head of the class!!!!! You're terrific.
"He was so pissed, and just flipped out, it was funny." I don't know anything about you other than this post but I can say with great confidence that your parents, your entire family should be very proud of you; and your teacher should view you as one of his very best students.

To hang in there with this bully, a guy who uses his position to intimidate seasoned lawyers, is remarkable. You were civil and obviously zeroed right in on his weak points. You didn't back down.

Damn, you deserve an A immediately. Don't let the professor beat you down. Where does he think he teaches, North Korea. You did what your supposed to do, you asked serious questions. My favorite line:

"What is your definition of conflict of interest, because I have a hard time seeing that you have one" -- you trapped him, made him ask you a question, then nailed him. Wonderful.

Consider a career in law or as a negotiator or even in politics. You'll sauced.

Where did your self confidence come form? You've got it!!!

249. My sister made him freak out too
A few years ago she was in a private Q&A thing held by her college. She was doing her senior thesis on drug policy in the US and Australia. She asked Scalia about his decisions on some controversial drug cases at the SCOTUS. She knew the cases well, since she had been researching them.

Scalia stares at my sister, then turns to the moderator and says: "I told you NO LAW STUDENTS". To which my sister replied that she wasn't a law student, just an undergraduate, and could he please address her questions. He refused, because he didn't want to "discuss specific cases, which is why I didn't want any law students here!"

Lololololol, he seems like quite the thin-skinned asshole.
