Has this occurred to anyone else?
We have come to the point where there will now be a national debate about whether or not an unprovoked nuclear attack on a non-nuclear country is a good idea.

How scary is that?

1. What's even scarier...
...is that the outcome of the debate will probably be "yes, its a great idea. Let's go do it right now!"

2. Logically follows two other crazy debates
1. whether we should hold people indefinitely without ever charging them; and

2. whether it's ok for the United States to sanction the use of torture.

Really, if you're willing to provide equal time to debate issues like this, what's the big deal about an unprovoked nuclear attack?

Bush's base is utterly amoral.

3. George Bush is not a NAZI.
He is something much, much worse.

He's worse than Gore Vidal's Kalki, IMFO.

5. Some here have said that BushCo is only saber rattling,
but I'm not so sure..These people really fucking scare me. I think they are capable of throwing a nuke. If they do N. Korea won't be far behind, and I'm not sure they'll back it up with troops.

19. That's what they said during the Iraq attack run-up...
"the authorization to use force is just a big stick to scare them with... we'd never actually USE it"

I think we can now guarantee that the idiot boy will use ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING he can get his hands on. And he will use it in the worst possible way as long as possible. It is what he has done in every instance.

Or that anyone would conceive such a plan.

7. USE NUKES and Iran strikes back
Such an egregious blunder will cost America dearly------the Straits of Hormuz will be easy for the Iranians to control long enough to ensure that the US cannot guarantee the flow of oil tankers.

Maybe that's why Iran removed alot of it's gold reserve from Switzerland

8. I thougth this same thing last night.
Pre-emptive nuclear strike, in my mind, would be the biggest war crime since the holocaust...

The fact that we have to even state that just shows how far down the toilet this country has gone since the giggling murderer took office...

9. Not scary at all. Since WWII, presidents have had the power to use
nuclear weapons against an enemy even though that enemy might not have nuclear weapons. Please remember that Japan was a non-nuclear country.

Any president who preemptively used nuclear weapons would have to answer to congress whether that act was justified. Congress has the impeachment process to remove any president but that's the only check on a president's use of nuclear weapons for a preemptive attack -- AND THAT'S AFTER THE FACT.

12. last time i checked JAPAN attacked Pearl Harbor - what has Iran done to us
Japan attacked the US - Iran has done no such thing.

Pre-emption is shrubs idea. We were already in a real WAR where Japan had attacked the US when the bombs were dropped on Japan. That is more than a minor quibble....

15. Preemption is not *'s idea. It was accepted by every president since
Truman.

* has just introduced the risk factor of a mentally unstable president having his/her hand on the nuclear trigger.

F-U, NSA, if your boss is going to kill hundreds of thousands of people, you are damn right there will be thousands of principled Americans who will do everything in their power to stop him.

Right now the only place I'm seeing this being discussed is primarily on DU.
