DU is shutting down!!!
Annoy somebody under a screen name....go to jail. Our ranks will be depleted in DAYS!!!

Every Southern/Christian/GLBT/Freeper (who have I left out?) on this board will put the smackdown on you.

http://news.com.com/Create+an+e-annoyance,+go+to+jail/2010-1028_3-6022491.html?part=rss&tag=6022491&subj=news

snip:
It's no joke. Last Thursday, President Bush signed into law a prohibition on posting annoying Web messages or sending annoying e-mail messages without disclosing your true identity.

snip:
Buried deep in the new law is Sec. 113, an innocuously titled bit called "Preventing Cyberstalking." It rewrites existing telephone harassment law to prohibit anyone from using the Internet "without disclosing his identity and with intent to annoy."

But this law is pathetic. EFF or somebody needs to file suit and get an injunction against its enforcement.

26. Or perhaps the biggest flame wars start over these subjects.
I've been posting here since before the last election (in spite of my low post count) and I can honestly say there have been posts where it was a very good thing that posters were in different parts of the country. Tempers tend to flair over the incredible stupidity of people who make suppositions about the intentions or leanings of other posters.

Yes, the title is inflammatory. If that annoys you, just have me arrested.

the annoying e-mail part with subject lines like: "I drink go pinprick" or "Is sign it dehumanise lettered installation" coming in to my mailbox on a daily basis. It's hard to keep up with deleting them. I'd go for an opt-out of ridiculous, annoying e-mail solicitations law.

But, actually, our identities on DU are known - at least to the owners of the site.

49.  Lawyers are going to have fun with this one
when people realize they can press charges against those who are annoy them through email, websites, etc. All sounds rather ambiguous. Have to wonder what the legal definition of "annoying" will be and how that precedent will be set. And does this insertion into the VAW act give tacit allowance to gaining the identity and location of said annoyer?

Beyond that, however, there is simply no such thing as anonymous on the internet (or anywhere else for that matter). It really does not matter what screen name you use because IP addys can be traced.

Pass that popcorn because this is going to be fun to watch.

50. I remember a while back
reading here on DU that they were trying to control the internet. I think this is about bloggers. The article points this out: Think about it: A woman fired by a manager who demanded sexual favors wants to blog about it without divulging her full name. An aspiring pundit hopes to set up the next Suck.com. A frustrated citizen wants to send e-mail describing corruption in local government without worrying about reprisals.

In each of those three cases, someone's probably going to be annoyed. That's enough to make the action a crime. (The Justice Department won't file charges in every case, of course, but trusting prosecutorial discretion is hardly reassuring.)

to get rid of. So much for the tort reform agenda he is so hip on. (I think that is against the constitution too. Our right to redress for our grievances should be a federally protected right.) But is this out and out hypocrisy or what. On the one hand he says we need to stop junk lawsuits, then with the other hand he signs into law that will help them proliferate. I think the man is over worked. I say let him go back to crawford and quit screwing with america. Sounds like a fair deal to me.
