Hold me, DU, I'm still in shock... |
|
Yesterday I was selling lumber and some guy needed help with something that two people in the whole store, me being one of them, know anything about. After reading the inscription on his shirt, I kinda went cold..."no sir, I don't know anything about that, but (guy who works contractor sales on weekends) is a real contractor, he'll be able to help you."
His shirt read "Inmate--Iraqi Freedom Correctional Facility." With a picture of the Abu Ghraib Prison! And it even had "Abu Ghraib, Iraq" written under the picture so you would be sure to get the message.
Who would design a shirt like that? Who would print it? Stock it? What kind of an animal would BUY a shirt like that?
Lots of DUers like to boast that "W" stickers are disappearing from cars in their areas. If you're in one of those areas, get on your knees and thank every deity you can think of from God to the Flying Spaghetti Monster that you live in an enlightened place, because some of us are in places where people brag about fucking torture.

These are really repugnant people. THEY are why the terrorists hate us, not because of our "freedom."

...kind of like the Evil Olson Twins, if there was such a thing.

3. I feel your pain, because... |
|
I live in Oklahoma.
I see plenty of really stupid stickers and t-shirts out here (not enough caffeine yet today to remember any specific ones). But, OMFG, none glorifying torture (yet).

5. Maybe you took it wrong? |
|
The Tshirt said: Inmate. It didn't say: Brutal Guard. There's lots of tshirts that say Property of Alcatraz and similar that obviously don't mean anything I see it as keeping an important subject out there in the public. Did you talk to him? Maybe he's anti war. SOme peeople who go into lumber yards are antiwar--like me. My tshirt says Buck Fush--maybe theres some wingnuts who havent wanted to serve me but Buck them too

6. As the old saying goes... |
|
"What goes around, comes around..."
Someday this stupid idiot will be wearing that shirt at the wrong time (which is all the time, in my mind) and someone will beat the shit out of him. Well deserved beating too.
Good for you for not helping him. Conscience follows consciousness. Be glad that you're enlightened, even if those around you are not.

7. I am in the same boat also. |
|
A truck I was behind the other day had a bumper sticker that said, "I'd rather go hunting with Dick Cheney than ride with Ted Kennedy." There were also W stickers and ribbon magnets in yellow and khaki and other colors rusting out his truck.
Posting from South Texas, Ilsa.

8. You Are There To Enlighten, I Suspect |
|
But I know you could never enlighten a cretin who wears such a shirt! I suspect you are quietly "planting seeds" in other ways with other people and in other times where you live. Those seeds will grow into trees eventually, if you stand with the Truth with a capitol "T". Torture is *never* right, any kintergarten kid knows that. I am so sorry you had to see such savagery. Just remember there are millions of others around the country who share your grief at the knowledge that such people exit and are our fellow Americans. For your courage to stay in such a place, I am grateful, for you are a voice in the wilderness. We need those voices!
Just keep in mind, you are not alone!

That sounds like one of those cutsey shirts Rush Limbaugh was peddling to his sheep for subscribing to his newsletter. I saw a man in a Office Depot wearing a shirt like the one you described and asked him if he was up for a little torture today. Of course, he was embarrassed by my remark and said "my brother got me this shirt".
Quite interesting but not surprising that Freepers and Ditto-heads talk a tough talk but can't back it up in person.

Hey, if you're gonna torture, might as well turn a profit on it, eh?

11. I can't decide. I think he could have been protesting. If the shirt |
|
says Inmate he is stating that he is an inmate by wearing it and the words Iraqi Freedom are in direct theoretical opposition to freedom by virtue of having a prison from which, we know, no one gets charged, representated, or tried. Just tortured. It could be a reverse dig.
Just throwing this out there.
One thing it does show - our sensitivity and state of suspension as our leaders plan and carry out torment and torture while ruining families of possibly innocent people - while they send us a go to hell message.
I really don't know about the t-shirt. It's worth a lateral look.

We actually have people around here--who have Active Duty ID cards in their wallets--who think the shit that went down at Abu Ghraib is the right thing to do. If I dug hard enough I could come up with some LTTEs that claim all's fair in war. From GIs.
I have taught Law of Land Warfare classes. On some guys, the shit goes in one ear and out the other.

but I would have assisted him and casually asked about it.

18. That one's really pretty. No, this wasn't like that at all. |
|
It was a picture of Abu Ghraib Prison in silhouette, with the "Inmate: Iraqi Freedom Correctional Facility" above and "Abu Ghraib, Iraq" underneath.
