"In the first sign that even Hastert could be in trouble..."
That announcement has touched off what promises to be a fierce struggle for House leadership. In the first sign that even Hastert could be in trouble, Rep. John E. Sweeney (R-N.Y.) said Republicans should consider whether to replace the speaker. "The time is right for us to do some soul-searching and have an open dialogue about the direction of the House."

8. Hastert was Delay's man in the speakers' office:
He never had an ounce of personal support.

He's either going to swear allegiance to the next guy or he will be challenged by the next guy or the next guy will run his own Hastert.

17. "The only reason he got the job was because...
the only kind of leg he likes is a turkey leg"

I remember hearing that when Hastert got the job.

Hastert was the pick after Bob Livingstone literally ran onto the floor to resign after Larry Flint turned over his rock.

11. Isn't Hastert being investigated for taking Turkish bribes?
or did that investigation get gagged along with Sibel Edmonds?

So much corruption, so little time.

Soul searching? Presumes a soul of course.

Open dialogue? Yeah - seen a lot of open door transparent dialogue and decision making these last 5 years. What the hell, the pres will be listening anyway.

Just like them. I wouldn't want them as any of my friends! If I was in trouble they'd abandon me surely even if it's just privatley (where it matters). Why would he make that statement I wonder....

14. What?! The "direction of the House" shouldn't include Turkish bribes?
It's so hard to keep up these days. Sheesh.

Tsk. Tsk. Oh, Denny. The repubs are taking their ball and kicking you off the playground. Please let the door hit you on the way out of the House - if you can still FIT through that door, I mean.

15. Some of the WaPo writers aren't very well informed,
Edited on Mon Jan-09-06 01:51 PM by leveymg
Or else, they really have those talking points down.

Vanity Fair reported months ago that Hastert is under investigation for taking bribes from Turkey. Sibel has been publicly accusing the Congressman of this for a lot longer. Further reports have him acting as a manager for Abramoff in the spreading around of millions in under-the-counter goodies to GOP lawmakers.

"The first sign that even Hastert could be in trouble . . ." Jeez. Does Mr. Weisman take the short bus home from work every day?
