1. In one way or another, the DU collective could nominate every
single person in the United States for that award :eyes:

21. I'd sure get a nomination. I say dumb things all the time.
But I have to say that if you are going on national TV to do a talk show about politics you should get your facts straight.

And treason has been loosely coined with leaking covert CIA agents on here before. I think it could be treasonous if the leak led to a problem with American Security.

23. That also applies to just about everyone on television
Why are we picking on Affleck?

Treason can be punished by execution. It's in the books.

6. On the contrary,
if the RW echo chamber wants to run with this, they can't ignore WHY it was said. They want this Plame issue to go away. Whatever tools we have to keep it on the front burner, I say use 'em.

7. Treason is no longer punishable by death?
I must have missed that memo.

My only problem with the quotes was that Affleck said "hung" instead of the grammatically-correct "hanged." Otherwise, it's accurate.

8. What's the problem?
He's correct. Exposing CIA agents is treason.

More people should be saying that in public. Thanks Ben.

11. Well if L. Brent Bozell, Malkin, Novak and CK Rairden say so
Edited on Mon Apr-10-06 11:57 AM by Mabus
Then why shouldn't we believe it?

http://www.nationalledger.com/about/columnists.shtml

CK Rairden is the publisher and managing editor of The National Ledger. Mr. Rairden is a political columnist and pundit and the former national editor of the Washington Dispatch. He has appeared on various Fox News Channel programs including “The Big Story with John Gibson” and “DaySide.” He is a weekly contributor to several newspapers including The East Valley (AZ) Tribune and The Platte County (MO) Landmark. Mr. Rairden is the principal author of The Scribe Journal.

National Ledger Columnists:

Michael Barone is a senior writer with U.S. News & World Report. He is the author of the forthcoming book Hard America, Soft America: Competition vs. Coddling and the Competition for the Nation's Future (Crown Forum, May 2004). He is also a regular contributor to the Fox News Channel.

L. Brent Bozell III is the founder and president of the Media Research Center. Mr. Bozell runs the largest media watchdog organization in America. He is regularly invited to provide media expertise on news programs by all the major networks and cable affiliates. He is also the founder of the Cybercast News Service.

Michelle Malkin is a nationally syndicated columnist for Creators Syndicate. She began her career in newspaper journalism with the Los Angeles Daily News in 1992. She is the author of "Invasion: How America Still Welcomes Terrorists, Criminals, and Other Foreign Menaces to Our Shores" and is currently a Fox News commentator.

Robert Novak is the author of one of the longest running syndicated columns in the nation, "Inside Report" and produces a twice-monthly newsletter, the Evans-Novak Political Report. He is a commentator for CNN and is the 2001 winner of the National Press Club's "Fourth Estate" award for lifetime achievement in journalism.

on edit: in fairness the by-line is Josh Hart. Hart bashed Alec Baldwin by quoting NewsMax.com's mischaracterization of the Baldwin-Hannity/Whitman/Levin exchange http://www.nationalledger.com/artman/publish/article_27264387.shtml

15. I did a Google search
Edited on Mon Apr-10-06 11:55 AM by LuckyTheDog
That was the only link about Affleck's statement that worked for me. But it has been reported elsewhere. In general, I don't think Hollywood stars do us a favor by saying bombastic things like that.

and I disagree with the GOP's characterization. Affleck said what a lot of people think. His statement had a factual basis.

12. Well, technically you can be hung for treason.
I have to agree with the summation of his performance. He was so jittery that it was more distracting/annoying than anything. It took away from any point he may have made.

I'll end with that and keep my comments regarding Cynthia McKinney to myself.

19. Re: McKinney comments you were unable to keep from making . . .
I'd rather be embarassed because someone from my party is batshit crazy (to quote Stewart) than because they're a war criminal.

I mean, it's still embarassing, but there is a qualitative difference.

Real Time with Bill Maher is only marginally serious about politics. Best not to judge Affleck's statement overly harshly.

14. Nah! I think he did a good job.
Of course the freepers will try to spin it to their sub-80 IQ listeners.

He made a good point that exposing a CIA agent IS treason.

He was fast on his feet and articulate. He used humor and sarcasm AND he got a good response from the audience.

It was the best "Real Time" this year.

BTW, I'm no fan of Ben at all.

22. I thought he was fantastic on Real Time...
It was clearly obvious to anyone watching the entire show, if they have a brain to think with, that he was exaggerating. he meant that it would take irrefutable proof to levy the charge of leaking Plame's name against Bush, because treason is so serious. People do get hung for treason, soldiers do take care of their own on the battlefield- positively and negatively, and there is a death penalty for treason.

I thought ben was awesome- very smart guy.
