Phone records... people in election phone jamming called White House!
WASHINGTON (AP) - Key figures in a phone-jamming scheme designed to keep New Hampshire Democrats from voting in 2002 had regular contact with the White House and Republican Party as the plan was unfolding, phone records introduced in criminal court show.

The records show that Bush campaign operative James Tobin, who recently was convicted in the case, made two dozen calls to the White House within a three-day period around Election Day 2002 _ as the phone jamming operation was finalized, carried out and then abruptly shut down.

The national Republican Party, which paid millions in legal bills to defend Tobin, says the contacts involved routine election business and that it was "preposterous" to suggest the calls involved phone jamming.

The Justice Department has secured three convictions in the case but hasn't accused any White House or national Republican officials of wrongdoing, nor made any allegations suggesting party officials outside of New Hampshire were involved. The phone records of calls to the White House were exhibits in Tobin's trial but prosecutors did not make them part of their case.

36. There have been scores of related posts here
Use the search feature for the names of the convicted felons.

Search the New Hampshire (where the crimes were committed) & Massachusetts (where the criminals are incarcerated) forums.

Pardon my callousness, but the word has been put out. DU is slow on the uptake.

Two other Republicans have pleaded guilty to one count each of conspiracy in the phone-jamming operation: Chuck McGee, former executive director of the New Hampshire Republican party; and Allen Raymond, a former colleague of Tobin’s who operated GOP Marketplace, a telemarketing service in Alexandria, Va. They are scheduled to be sentenced in February and March.

In past court proceedings, prosecutors have said McGee planned the phone-jamming operation and discussed it with a "high-ranking official in the New Hampshire State Republican Committee." So far, that official has not been named or charged.

Tobin is accused of putting McGee in touch with Raymond after McGee complained he could not find a telemarketer able or willing to carry out his plan. McGee then wrote a $15,600 check, using state Republican party funds, to GOP Marketplace, according to court records.

GOP Marketplace in turn paid an Idaho telemarketing company $2,500 to place hundreds of computerized hang-up calls to five phone lines used by state Democrats and one used by the Manchester firefighters’ union, the indictment says. More than 800 hang-up calls tied up the phones for nearly an hour and a half, before the unnamed official ordered McGee to stop the jamming.

33. Multiple malicious calls
made repetitively in order to prevent genuine callers getting through - increases the chances of getting the engaged tone.

Similar stunt on servers is civil electronic disobedience aka floodnet. That was used against the Mexican Government a few years back - shut them down for a month or so by blocking all ports into their server.

22. They did this in Ohio in 04
When I tried to call the voter fraud hotline after seeing a republican vote challenger working
with the precinct judge and a vote machine going down (WHEN THE VOTE WAS POSTED IT WAS 42%
BUSH* ..... AND HAD THE HIGHEST NUMERICAL NUMBER OF BUSH VOTES .... EVEN THOUGH IT HAD THE
LOWEST # OF VOTES IN IT .... VOTES POSTED SOMETIME AFTER MIDNIGHT)

I tried to call the voter protection #. A strange voice kept chanting "junk" and it said i was # 8 on the
waiting list to talk .... when it got to # 6 ..... after 40 minute wait I was dumped.

This block lasted until Kerry conceded and was replaced with a fast busy signal.

* All other machines were 29 to 31% bush.

Edited on Mon Apr-10-06 08:27 PM by chill_wind
who is connected to the McCain Campaign..

Here's a guy who was actually in the indictment of DeLay on his money laundering charges. When he was at the RNC, he agreed to take the corporate contributions from DeLay's PAC and then recycle them back into the Republican congressional races.

And he was also, this guy Nelson was also the supervisor of James Tobin, who was the guy convicted last year for helping jam the Democratic get-out-the-vote lines in New England a couple years ago.

28. Ken Mehlman received 75 calls! Bwwaahhhaaaa.
Edited on Mon Apr-10-06 08:48 PM by chill_wind
Catshrink upthread called it. See Buzzflash link...

The Union Leader today reported that "court records show Ken Mehlman's office received more than 75 telephone calls from now-convicted phone-jam conspirator James Tobin from Sept. 30 to Nov. 22 of that year." At the time, Mehlman--the current RNC Chair--was White House political director. This raises the disturbing question of whether Tobin, who worked for the RNC and the NRSC at the time and has since been convicted on two criminal charges for his role in the scheme, discussed the plan with one of the President's most important political strategists.

Today's news also has important implications for other national Republican figures. At the time the phone jamming scheme was devised and implemented, Tobin's supervisor at the RNC was Terry Nelson, who Arizona Republican Senator John McCain recently hired as a senior strategist for his Political Action Committee. This means that McCain may have hired one of the key figures in the phone jamming scheme.

Ken Mehlman Chairman Republican National Committee 310 First Street, SE Washington DC, 20003

Dear Ken,

Yesterday, the AP ran a story entitled "Phone Jamming Records Point to White House." This story provides new details about the role of the New Hampshire Republican Party in the phone-jamming scandal and raises serious questions as to whether the RNC and the White House were actively involved.

As you know, on Election Day, a telemarketer hired by the New Hampshire GOP jammed telephone lines at five state Democratic and one firefighters union get-out-the-vote phone banks. The AP noted yesterday that the "records show that Bush campaign operative James Tobin, who recently was convicted in the case, made two dozen calls to the White House within a three-day period around Election Day 2002 - as the phone jamming operation was finalized, carried out and then abruptly shut down."

The AP story also stated that virtually all the calls to the White House went to the same number (202-456-6173) which currently rings inside the political affairs office. Although the White House declined today to say which staffer was assigned that phone number in 2002, you may be able to shed some light on the subject, as you were the White House Political Director during that time.

You have often spoken of the importance of making sure that every vote counts. In that spirit, we hope that you will take the necessary steps to clear up the lingering confusion surrounding the RNC and the White House's role in this scandal by answering these questions:

James Tobin called the White House two dozen times in three days. Whom was he calling? With whom did he speak? Whom did he work with in the office of political affairs?

Tobin worked directly with Terry Nelson, who was then political director at the RNC. When will Mr. Nelson answer questions about his role in the scandal? Whom else at the RNC did Tobin work with?

Did the White House authorize this phone jamming scheme and, if so, who specifically did so? Or was the phone jamming authorized by the RNC?

Was anyone on the White House staff or at the RNC involved in concocting, authorizing, implementing or concealing this scheme?

The overt effort by the New Hampshire Republican Party to suppress the vote on Election Day in 2002 is unconscionable. The people of New Hampshire deserve an apology. And America deserves to know exactly how deeply the White House and the RNC were involved in the planning and execution of this scheme. We hope you will provide the answers we need so we can move forward together.

Sincerely,

Governor Howard Dean, MD

Chairman
