Is Valerie Plame named in the Oct. 2002 NIE? |
|
I know this is a dumb question, but it has never been outright said from what I've heard and read. bush says he declassified the NIE, but it's not clear if she is named in it.
I know she is named in a classified state department memo.
Can anyone clear this up?

1. I believe the answer is no. |
|
The NIE in question doesn't say anything about Wilson.

This thing just doesn't add up. The October 2002 NIE appears to be a smokescreen to cover up the truth.

5. FAS excerpts show the 'propaganda' in the NIE was being catapulted then |

too. Key Judgments http://www.fas.org/irp/cia/product/iraq-wmd.html
Bush 'declassified' it in order to say Iraq had WMDs despite none being physically present in the country. Neat trick.
"We judge that Iraq has continued its weapons of mass destruction (WMD) programs in defiance of UN resolutions and restrictions. Baghdad has chemical and biological weapons as well as missiles with ranges in excess of UN restrictions; if left unchecked, it probably will have a nuclear weapon during this decade. (See INR alternative view at the end of these Key Judgments.)"
In essence, the NIE says there are WMDs in Iraq 'because the administration says so'.

6. Reportedly, Key Judgments section of NIE declassified: no Plame/Wilson |
|
in that section. The Key Judgements was publicly released (not just whispered by Libby in Judy Miller's ear on July 8) on July 18, 2003 and is available for download on the net. Libby of course blabbed stuff that was still classified to Miller not only on July 8 but a June 23 meeting that neither mentioned to the grand jury. Judy, however, miraculously recovered her memory of that June meeting after Fitz expressed....concern.
(Note: as far as I can tell the entire NIE wasn't declassified at that time and Libby did not lug a 59 page document to the St Regis Hotel for his breakfast with Judy, although some journalists/commentators/posters may have given that impression.)
Doesn't matter as much as it might seem though IMO since leaking of Plame was independent of the NIE info itself, although the sharing of NIE info and the Plame leak were part of the same attack on Wilson.
Clear as mud, eh? Libby's trying to kick up all the dust he can to distract from himself and the fact that he's not indicted for leaking but lying and obstructing justice.

7. The NIE said the Niger yellowcake story was bullshit. |
|
That assessment came from info that Valerie Plame uncovered. By declassifying it, the Bushies were trying to insinuate Wilson was biased against the Iraq-Niger story.
But Wilson had no connection to the report OTHER THAN THROUGH HIS WIFE. Declassifying the report would have done nothing toward discrediting Wilson without the knowledge that his wife had a part in writing it.
