Because they'll have punted yet again on many of the defining issues of the campaign, and they'll be percieved as cowardly, disorganized and incapable of leadership.
And I'm not sure that characterization wouldn't be accurate.

These confirmation hearings are just a joke. The nominee is coached and trained not to answer anything. He might as well just go home and we will call him when it is over so he can go for fittings on his new black robe.
