NEW WORD FOR DUer's: "BORKLETTE" Memo From Reid
Report: Democratic memo brands Alito 'Borklette'
RAW STORY
Published: January 9, 2006

As the country tunes in this week to the confirmation hearings of Judge Samuel Alito for the Supreme Court, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is taking up the issue of corruption and alleged abuses of power by the White House, according to talking-point e-mails circulated within the Democratic Caucus over the last several days, (paid-restricted) ROLL CALL's John Stanton reports Monday. Excerpts...

Saying “the stakes could not be higher,” Reid aide Rebecca Kirszner argues in a set of talking points circulated today that “today, an independent Supreme Court is too often the last check against abuse of power and the final protector of individual rights.”

The memo brands Alito a “Borklette,” based on his praise of failed Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork, and outlines a series of historical and recent instances in which Alito has backed a strengthened hand for the executive branch, including a 2000 speech to the conservative Federalist Society in which Alito backed the theory of a “unitary executive” under which Judicial and Congressional oversight is limited.
