"A Reinstated Military Draft? Advice From An Old Man"
Due to a craze of events around the world, the United States may find it necessary to reinstate the draft; that is, the U.S. government might be forced into telling our nation’s youth that they have no choice but to honor the call of Uncle Sam, don a military uniform, and go to war.

The precipitating factor for such an emergency will likely be that of a joint venture between Israel and the United States, a coordinated military attack upon Iran sometime around late spring or early summer of 2006. Iran has apparently decided to do whatever it must in order to develop its nuclear facilities. On the other hand, Israel and the United States have made it clear that they will not allow Iran to do such a thing. Short of a miracle there seems to be no way out, no way to avoid such a clash.

Now, if such a war does become a reality, I suppose that our government could decide to forgo a ground war, and simply bomb the hell out of Iran. However, although such a strategy would likely “fill the bill” in the primary stages of the war, it would not be long before ground troops would be needed.

Believe me, there is no way Iran will simply roll over and play dead. As the dominant Shiite player in the Middle East, they will fight to the bitter end to protect their rights as a sovereign nation. If attacked, they can be counted on to retaliate by launching missiles upon Israel, encouraging the Shiite-dominated government of Iraq to battle coalition forces, coordinate an Iranian-Syrian “squeeze attack” upon U.S. ground forces stationed in Iraq, blockade the Strait of Hormuz impeding the flow of oil around the world, as well as activating a worldwide dormancy of “sleeper cells” set up for the purpose of attacking American interests at home and abroad.

1. The message here is do not let bush's war spread to Iran,
What the hell is wrong with them being willing to fight to the bitter end to protect their rights as a sovereign nation? Not one damn thing.

4. I just want to watch them try to draft some of these kids here in Austin
I'm too old (I think, I hope), but some of the kids in this town will not serve under this Imperial President.

14. there and everywhere else
I've been to Austin, and it's a wonderful city. There are a lot of youth all over the country that will wind up with jailtime over this, and hopefully they won't back down.

6. I tend to doubt that
there will be a draft. The Republicans, while vile and evil, are, contrary to generally perceived opinion around here, far too intelligent to destroy themselves through the imposition of a draft. If a draft is installed, it will only be through a patriotic Democratic Party initiative.

But why would they do that? Especially as they would know that they would get the blame? Why help the Repukes out of whatever hard spot they had gotten themselves into. Hence, neither party has any interest in re-instituting the draft. So it will not be re-instituted.

Perhaps you think that I am mistaken in attributing intelligence to the Repukes? All I can say is, "Why are they in power, and we are not?". You can talk all you want about stolen elections, corporate ownership of the mass media, lying to the gullible American public, corruption at the highest levels, etc. They probably all contribute, but the Repukes still maintain their hold on power. We should be able to take it away from them, if we are smarter. However, perhaps intelligence isn't really the word I want for the Repukes. "Low cunning" might be a better choice.

Whatever, we need to look at what they are doing logically, coldly, and realistically and figure out what to do about it. How do we get our message out effectively? How do we neutralize the evil Diebold machinations? How do we wake the American people to the evil plans of the neo-cons to subject the whole MidEast to their hegemony in order to steal their oil?

I seem to have gotten a little off subject. But I get discouraged at the number of people that seem to think the Republicans are going to do something really stupid that we can benefit from. You can't wait around for those things to happen, you have to make them happen. Pardon the rant.

7. The draft
It's the last thing I'd wish for, but it may come to that. One reason this admin has gotten away with so many things referring to the war in Iraq, is because we have no draft. If draft age people meaning men & women now, were forced into the military as we were in the 60's, I believe you would see allot more demonstrations in the streets and on college campuses.

Since Bu$h went to Iraq, the citizens haven't been asked to do much. Go shopping, I believe thats what Bu$h ask people to do. But the sacrifice hasn't been personal on a large scale yet! that will surely change if they re-instate the draft.

I don't believe this admin wants that, they may be forced into the situation if they decide to go into Iran. I pray that cooler heads will prevail, and Bu$h will get the advice form counselors that will take the country away from the path to more war.

8. You need money to fight a war & W already emptied the piggy bank
Not only would a draft need to be re-instated, tax hikes that would make the CEO's and Brazillionaires squeal like stuck pigs would be needed. Hope that the Have-mores avarice stops His Imperial Chimpness from widening any conflict in the Near East.

15. Bush had super-rich buddies bailing him out in his previous incarnation
as drunken loafer and oilman. The problem now is no-one has more money than the USA? They might run up a bill but there isn't a rich, indulgent relative or family friend to foot the bill this time. China is already getting jittery about the level of debt, God help us all if they decide to devalue again or worse float the currency on international markets.

Once China's internal market is strong enough to spur their own growth they could cut the USA loose and bid for raw materials on an open market.

11. Isreal bombs Iran...
Iran responds by liberating Iraq (and is able to because Halliburton cuts and runs at the sight of half a million Iraqi infantry) while the REMFs are like WTF!

It could get real fugly real quick.

12. I've thought for a while that the draft would be necessary;
I'm too old to be caught, but I have a 20 yo son who would be cannon fodder. Does anyone know which countries I can take him to when there is a draft? I believe that Canada has closed the loop from last war. If it was a situation like WWI or even a morally correct war, hell I'd go myself. This is not the war, the time or the place for me to sacrifice my son.
