...is how out of touch the Repubs in that District are. They obviously thought it was such a safe bet for them that they fielded about a quarter million candidates and fractured their vote into tiny pieces.

Haven't they been watching the news? They're not kings of the hill anymore.

never underestimate how "unaware" it is here. This might be the most boring coastal city on the planet, culturally. The repubes here are LOADED. And the progressives are few. And the rest... just don't give a crap.

Solana Beach, Carlsbad is the heart of the district. Probably not Del Mar? Most are surf heads and don't give a crap; but boring. San Diego may be too much of an intellectual vacuum in many areas. But, it is the American dream , if you are rich.
Encinitas, Del Mar, Carlsbad has independent film, theater, micro breweries. Not a total wasteland. Just don't bore the population with information overload. Takes away from sun bathing.
still, give many credit. It is the home of Fernando Suarez de Solez ( of Gold Star families fame, and many dedicated peace dissenters.) They fight a brave fight for this area. They deserve our praise. I understand Busby had a very successful anti war protest on a beach road with turn out in the thousands, lined the streets for endless blocks.
another local COngressional Demo candidate, who deserves our support. Look to the district to the north.
a really vacuous dead head is the congressman to the north. Rep. Daryl Issa. THe Demo candidate is a Jeannie -( forget her last name.) web site. "Dream of Jeannie in COngress." please check out her efforts, she is as brave as Francine BUsby. Issa is a really rich, azz hole who funds lots of freeper causes. He was the main source of funds that got Gray Davis recalled. He and the efforts of Howard Kooligan caused this disaster that got Gropernator elected governator.

and those "surfheads" better start giving a CRAP or the Ocean they like so much(me too) is going to be a wasteland. My son is a surfer in Kauai and he sure gives a CRAP.

My heart goes out to California..my daughter was born at University Hospital in San Diego. Those repubs better wake up and smell the dirty laundry the kooligians and izzas of their world are forever trying to sanitize.

We presently live in EUrope. Still registerd voters in the district just to the north of the 50th. One hopeful sign. I think the top two finishers will go in for the run off.? Bilbray a former Repug congressman came in second. But, Bilbray is a registered lobbyists? How can that help? Well, those suckers elected the Duke? Will they ever learn.
Having lived there and still technically citizens of the area. It is so retired military! Blood and guts types. DO they ever get enough blood? With some, doubt it. The world has Lots of heathens to kill. THe religous freekies and gun nutz, and immigrant bashers are a pretty good segment of the voting population in North San Diego.. Will not be easy?
Best method of attack. Bilbray is a registered lobbyist. We need more of that.
One good sign. Even the Repugs had to hold their noses for nut jobs such as St. Sen. Morrow and Kooligan.

Much of this San Diego North County area is filled with pseudo-Christian SUV bumper sticker Republicans, immersed in the FAUX News culture.

Billbray will win in the runoff.
No way will this area vote in a Democratic candidate, especially inland from me...no way.

You know the area best -maybe you're right not to be hopeful, but consider: the GOP's primary for Nov will be on the same day as the run-off. That means they won't all be towing the same line yet.

Bowers (who's usually pretty realistic) still sees the race at a tipping point for June:

Busby is in command in this district, which is solid red. Or rather, it was solid red, but like a lot of districts nationwide, that isn't the case anymore. I like our chances in June. I don't know if we will pass the 44% mark that I thought would pretty much sow this one up, but we still might. Either way, as we saw last November, victory is now within sight.

Update: OK, I lied about going to bed. Currently, Busby is at 43.89%, with 418 of 445 precinct in. Looks like Bilbray will "win." Combined, the 14 Republicans have dropped below 53%. Good luck holding 94% of that coalition together with 10% of the money, only one canddiate, a social conservative activist base that doesn't like the nominee, and when you start with only 15.13%.

Update 2: Busby rises to 43.97% with 430 of 445 precincts in. The non-Republican vote rises to 47.34%. Bilbray is ahead of Roach by about 900 votes. Turnout looks to be around 130K.

15. Amazing how California retains its image as a hotbed of liberalism...

...when all you have to do in most places is drive inland 30 miles or so to find a different demographic. I wonder if it's the summer heat that fries their sensibilities to a fine conservative crisp.

My brother lives in San Clemente and has mastered the art of never telling his neighbors or co-workers what he thinks about politics or religion. No bumper stickers on HIS car. Although he's not inland, SC is very Orange County.

Too bad she couldn't win outright when she was so far ahead of the other people running. But it was still a great outcome. That district usually goes Republican. Hopefully, this is a sign of things to come. I don't think that San Diego is so conservative anymore. Want more proof? In the paper today, they had the annual box-office results. V For Vendetta was #8 nationwide, but it was in 6th place in San Diego. V is supposed to be a pretty liberal film, so if it's doing better here than the national average, I think things have definitely changed here. About time! :thumbsup:

20. Just like the US/ Calif. has it's red and blue areas.

San Diego is pretty much split 50/50. It has lots of Democrats, but a very slight repug tilt. Probably the spill over from Orange county to it's north and Camp Pendleton's influence. But San Diego has two, sometimes three Democratic congress members.
LA Times said the red/blue Calif split is generally inland/coastal. The coast has most of the population so , so far the coast's influence is far superior in winning elections to inland.
I think it is that's inlands excesive sun and heat cooks the brain. THose inland voters however are as wacky as say Arizona.If they reigned, you'd have a senator similar to those elected in Arizona or worse.
SO the influence of the so called surfheads, might not be so bad. THose that do care often belong to various environmental organizations.
