Snuck it past us: House subcommittee voted to kill Internet

A House subcommittee handed phone companies a victory Wednesday by voting 27-4 to advance a bill that would make it easier for them to deliver television service over the Internet and clearing the way for all Internet carriers to charge more for speedier delivery.

The lopsided vote was a defeat for Internet and technology firms like Google and Microsoft, which had hoped to amend the bill to enforce a principle called network neutrality and preserve the status quo under which all Internet traffic is treated equally.

Earlier in the day, the subcommittee voted 23-8 to reject an amendment by Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., that would have inserted specific language designed to enforce network neutrality and prevent the feared creation of fast and slow lanes on the Internet.

I am from Michigan, and the Congressman from my area (R)FRED UPTON, is the one who wrote the Bill. He was on C-Span, discussing the Bill this past week. I was mortified to hear that it passed to committee. The sh** is going to hit the fan, when people realize they want their TV programming,internet provider, telephone ALL owned by a FEW companies. WHAT do you think is going to happen to those greedy companies. HIGH RATES. I want UPTON OUT...he is up for election. He is being challenged by KIM CLARK...he sounds great...I read his bio..and is totally against media control by big companies. He is a Professor of Screening at DuPaul University. This is insane, taking our rights away, can we say the FIRST amendment.

6. You have got to know big business will want control of the internet

Power companies wanted all the power lines and plants that tax payers put in because there was not enough money in for business to do it. When it was done at tax payers cost they took it over. This will be the same. Congress will sell it off. Even people who vote GOP can see that. For some odd reason they think their will be no bad control with big business or I guess that is how they think.

broadband or DSL that I will still be paying more..I dont understand what this is all about..I live in a rural area and for me to get a high speed service it will be a couple years yet ..Will my ISP bill increase or when I access the internet is there a charge to access certain sites??

If the Phone Co. own the phone lines, they will up their prices. However, there are solutions to internet service for Rural America. StarBand and Direct Way. Both are via Satellite. I am a Dish Network Dealer in rural Michigan. We sell StarBand, however, Dish Network is coming out with their Satellite for internet, this fall. It is JUST as fast as DSL and priced economically. I worked on it at our summit! I am sure its going to be comparitively priced for service. StarBand and Direct Way are pricey. From what I understand, It will be affordable for ALL people. I won't know more until mid-summer.

Will cable be affected by this?

I've also heard that satellite internet is only one way (downstream); uploading happens over your regular phone line, is that true for Dish's new service?

paying per site, differing rates depending on site category.
Paying every which way.
Accesss limited to credit-card holders.

Oh, yes: And all of this would mean ZERO privacy, as all visited sites and their costs would be on a credit-card statement.

23. I predict places like democratic underground becoming

a model for "neutrality" on these internets. Traffic will spin off into a "black market" or internet underground where freedom rings from every network router. Many people will refuse this. The "fencing" in of the internet can't be controlled like the subdivision of land. It's just too cybery and subject to technological change to be monopolized like that.

We'll have "surfer owned" websites and so forth.
