CONCORD, N.H. -- When Jean Diamond asked Sen. John McCain a polite but tough question about federal spending last weekend, McCain turned churlish.

"I'm not getting anything I really need and my grandchildren are getting saddled with $9 trillion in debt," said Diamond, a Keene retiree. "Why should I vote Republican?"

Because, McCain replied, Democrats have also voted to increase federal spending.

"Maybe," the Arizona Republican suggested, "you should vote for the vegetarians."

Diamond was not amused by McCain's sarcasm. "Republicans are in charge of three Houses," she snapped back. "You have no excuse."

McCain shook his head. "Yes, ma'am," he said, peering at the 500 people gathered at the town meeting. "I knew we should have cut this thing off."

These are not always happy times for John McCain, as he abruptly adjusts from being America's favorite political insurgent to his new status as the Republican Party's 2008 presidential front-runner.

What may have been seen as feistiness and a penchant for sardonic humor six years ago when he vaulted into national political prominence, is now sometimes regarded as a tendency to be testy and arrogant. Some Democrats who once found him so refreshing are now charging him with blind loyalty to the GOP. Republican conservatives, long suspicious of McCain's maverick tendencies, are demanding proof he's loyal to their pet causes.

Frankly, I don't really know what this man has to run on. The Republicans have a horrid record since they took over, and they still try to blame it on the Democrats. I think people are seeing through this excuse as a childish and arrogant way of not accepting responsibility for what they've done.

Fiscally, they have created a nightmare with deficits, wasteful spending, and a debt load that will strangle future generations. The Republicans should be punished for this in November, and I believe they will be.

Trying to be a comedian or entertainer in response to serious questions will not work this time like it originally did for Bush. America has learned that lesson. We don't need a Good Humor man, we need a President (for a change).

in an interview with NBC/MSNBC during the primary and within a week the newscoverage of Dean turned very strongly negative, within two weeks: the "Dean Scream" -- they punished him BUT GOOD for threatening their hold on the propaganda.

In case anyone doesn't know the truth about the "Dean Scream" -- the media claimed that Howard screamed AT his supporters after Iowa primary, demanding that they do better in the next round - work harder, collect more money, win!, win!, win! And the media had video tape that made it look like Dean screamed AT his supporters -- but he didn't. Someone put Howard on a microphone he had not used before -- one that only picks up sounds made inches away from it to prevent crowd noise from being broadcast along with the speakers/singers voice. So -- the microphone did not pick up the Dean supporters who were cheering and chanting and screaming with great enthusiasm about how well they had done and how excited they were to move on to the next primaries. Dean was 'screaming' into the mic thinking that he had a standard microphone and would have to 'scream' to be heard above the roaring, adoring crowd.

We've GOT to revolutionize the media -- but the next awesome candidate who runs with this in mind must remember to never, never, never say it aloud until elected!
