What Game Were They At? 'Wash Post' Deaf to Boos for Cheney

NEW YORK The veteran Associated Press reporter Terence Hunt heard them. Reuters heard them. In fact, virtually every press account of opening day for the Washington Nationals baseball team at RFK Stadium this afternoon mentioned that when Vice President Dick Cheney was introduced to throw out the first pitch he was loudly booed or at the minimum received more jeers than cheers. A video of the event proves it.

But here's how David Nakumura of the hometown Washington Post described it:

"The first pitch of the Washington Nationals' second season at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium was low and away, bouncing in the dirt before being scooped up by catcher Brian Schneider.

"For that, Vice President Cheney received a round of boos from the home crowd this afternoon. But the catcalls didn't last long before the fans cheered for the Nationals, who took the field in their white uniforms with red trim against the New York Mets."

No one else suggested that it was the quality of the pitch that set off the booing.

1. Even the right-wing Washington Times reported it correctly
Mr. Cheney strode out of the Nats' dugout and boos immediately began to rain down on him, growing to a crescendo as he neared the mound.

8. He throws like a girl!

Every manly man knows you face sideways to throw a ball. Girls (and Cheney) think you are supposed to face the way you are throwing, resulting in the ridiculous posture you see in the picture, and the ridiculous results that followed.

This guy is so incompetent he can't even throw a ball. No wonder he got booed. What a loser.

..or so I thought.

He's probably used to servants--uh, domestic assistants--to do this sort of thing for him...

12. um ... wow.
how did we get from the Washington Post is misrepresenting the crowd's hatred of Cheney to Cheney's so incompetent he can't even throw a ball - he's like a GIRL - in other words, ridiculous, a LOSER?

Oh you knew it was coming ... that's a tired old phrase, "throw like a girl." Some girls kick butt in fast pitch softball. Years ago, parents never properly trained their daughters to throw a ball in the proper manner. Nope! He throws like a WIMP. My momma could kick his butt. To this day, she looks at surfers on the North Shore of Oahu and says to me, "I could have done that!" :P

I know some girls (and young women) who you wouldn't want to take on in martial arts and kick boxing ... I've seen one of them get their nose broken outright, and all I know have had blood drawn during competition ... and trust me, many are very petite where you wouldn't know looking at them ;) ...

nope, please be advised, if we raise our daughters right - "throwing (or fighting) like a girl is no longer a statement implying weakness but that of inner strength."

Am I the only one who burned her training bra in the 70s for Women's Equality or at ... least some more options for girl/women's teams?

10. As usual, WaPo missed the BIG story:
My e-mail to ombudsman:

Cheney was booed for his bad pitch?
Really?
I think your paper missed the big story.
How on earth did the crowd know in advance that the pitch would be in the dirt so they could begin booing Cheney's performance from the moment he walked on the field?
Wow!
That's truly amazing.

11. Oh come now. They were booing the bad intelligence from the catcher!
The catcher signaled for high and inside but Cheney astutely read it as low and away.
