Illegal and legal immigration occur for one simple reason: The people who migrate are looking for a better life. In most cases, the thing they pursue to bring them that life is, pure and simple, money.

The valve that will shut down most of our present illegal immigration is already in the hands of the American government. Our leaders must insist that the Mexican and Central American governments properly take care of their own citizens and provide them with employment that will pay them a "living wage" where they currently reside.

Don't expect that to happen. Our present American government and the governments of Mexico and Central America are in collusion with international business conglomerates. None of these multi-fingered institutions have any intention of pursuing such a lofty goal. Why would they? That goal would primarily benefit, rather than profit from, the bottom rungs of their societies. There's no money to be made with that philosophy.

Our current crop of exposed corrupt politicians and the numerous greedy CEOs and higher management of corporations continue to make outrageous personal perks and profits while they fire thousands of employees at a time. They have no intention of protecting or taking care of working-class citizens as long as the governments allow them this abuse.

To Big Business, both the American worker and the immigrant worker are the same. The business motto: Get the absolute most work out of every worker for the cheapest pay possible, even if it's not a living wage.

2. What about unions?

I was just listening to Thom Hartmann, and he said that one of the primary casues of the illegal immigrant problem was the destruction of the union movement starting with Reagan.

It would be very difficult for an illegal alien to work in a union shop, since you can't join a union if you are in the country illegally.

A second cause Thom mentioned is the rolling back of penalties on employers.

And Thom is right about that. The working class has been destroyed by Reagan. And it's still happening.
