Policeman's death linked to post-9/11 work
NEW YORK - The death of a 34-year-old detective who developed respiratory disease after working at ground zero is directly related to the Sept. 11 attacks, a coroner said in the first known ruling that attributes a death to recovery work at the World Trade Center site.

James Zadroga’s family and union released his autopsy results Tuesday, saying they are proof of the first death of a city police officer related to the response effort after the terrorist attacks.

“It is felt with a reasonable degree of medical certainty that the cause of death in this case was directly related to the 9/11 incident,” wrote Gerard Breton, a pathologist at the Ocean County (N.J.) medical examiner’s office.

Zadroga, of Little Egg Harbor, N.J., died in January of respiratory failure and had inflammation in his lung tissue due to “a history of exposure to toxic fumes and dust,” Breton wrote.

1. That's too bad
Not surprising I guess - even assuming all buildings were built without a hint of abestos, one would assume burning regular materials combining might produce some pretty bad effects.

for at least manslaughter.

From the article -
A class action lawsuit and families of ground zero workers have alleged more than two dozen deaths are related to exposure to trade center dust, which doctors believe contained a number of toxic chemicals including asbestos and more than 1 million tons of tower debris.

“They all knew it was detrimental to their health,” said Joseph Zadroga, the detective’s father. “They all knew that, yet they stayed there.”

Doctors running health screening programs, including a city registry following tens of thousands of people, say it will take decades to assess the health effects of working at the trade center site.

Please recall, EPA said it was safe to go back to work and live in lower Manhattan a week after the attack. It turned out that the EPA's original statement was changed by the White House to say that there were no dangers when the science (facts) were not in as of yet. The EPA union was up in arms after the fact.

4. Dogday, I have posted articles about this on DU intermittently for
as long as I've been a member, and for some odd reason those posts have received very little attention. I cannot even begin to say how important the overall story is. The White House deliberately lied by omission and has since not only caused deaths of our heroic responders but also endangered the lives of the people who live and work in the area. Dogs are dying early of these diseases and cases of childhood asthma has skyrocketed. This shows the pure reckless disregard that the sociopath in chief has for the life of the people of NY.

6. It proves their reckless disregard a week after 9/11. I never bookmarked
but just did a short search and here is one that wound up in the 9/11 forum.

8. The local NBC news in NY reported this death this morning and
discussed much of what is in the article. They did say that the lawsuit was against Whitman. It goes much higher up than her.......
