That's gotta SUCK! Poor Cubans. Just Wanted a Better Life!
According to the AP, "Fifteen Cubans who fled their homeland and landed on an abandoned bridge piling in the Florida Keys were returned to their homeland Monday after U.S. officials concluded that the structure did not constitute dry land.

"Under the U.S. government's 'wet-foot, dry-foot' policy, Cubans who reach dry land in the United States are usually allowed to remain in this country, while those caught at sea are sent back."

Hasn't George W. Bush been talking a lot about those people around the world who are "yearning for freedom"?

I suppose he meant it, so long as it didn't mean non-whites coming over here to be free. (fucker)

4. Why can't those damned Miami Cubans pick these people up
and bring them to U.S. soil, so that they can have asylum?

7. Good point
If they had some powerboats, what would happen if they met some rafters halfway and sped them back? Would they be charged with "traficking"?

5. We're letting in White illegals?
Making this a race issue doesn't help the Democratic image. Unless you can prove we're letting in illegal White folk it's not a race issue. All illegals no matter where they are do not deserve USA citizenship just because they want a better life.

Secure the borders and legalize guest worker programs. Arrest the corporate farms and sweat shops that exploit illegal workers. EOM.

10. The Cubans get a lot of breaks that other "illegals" don't get.
It's really a travesty. If Cuba had a RW government, Cuban refugees would be treated like people of any other nationality, i.e., sent back.

14. Cubans do get breaks...
But not enough (IMHO). Other countries (Haiti was mentioned) don't get even that much.

We could do more if we want to talk about "freedom" as much as GWB does.

I mean shit, did we actually scratch out the tablet on the Statue of Libery yet? Or just not let people climb to the crown anymore (which was the only place you could read it from)?

11. I live in the Keys. The whole thing is insane.
It's the poor people who don't have money who end up either drowned or on a piling a few feet from solid ground. We see broken up empty rafts and homemade boats every once in a while washed on shore. The ones who have some money hire people who illegally bring them to shore. And I don't believe in the dry-foot policy anyway, because it just encourages families to take this huge risk; families who bring babies and small children and old grandparents. Not to mention that the policy excludes refuges from other islands. It's just insane. We run around the world looking to liberate other countries, but we can't attempt to make peace with our own neighbors.

12. A Cuban wants a better life and if they touch soil they can stay?
What about any other immigrant who wants a better life and is hauled back to their country? Is it because they didn't come by boat but across a scorching hot desert?

18. I Want Freedom to Travel to Cuba
The wetfoot/dryfoot policy is meant to for a stick in the eye to Castro, showing that Cubans will do anything to leave Cuba.

Truth is, many Cubans travel to Miami and other US cities regularly and then return to Cuba!!!

Not every Cuban wants to live in Miami, but you won't find American media telling that story!!
