Gown-lifting incident embarrasses hospital
CHARLOTTE COUNTY — A Southwest Florida man was issued a formal apology after a hospital worker lifted his gown and mocked him during an emergency room procedure.

William Deloge says the man's actions have left him with a lifetime of embarrassment.

Deloge was rushed to the hospital suffering from heat exhaustion in July. He was sedated, hooked up to a catheter and connected to a machine to help him breathe.

"Next thing I remember is I'm kind of waking up felt my gown being lifted. And at first I thought I was going to be examined for something and I hear this voice going, 'Peek-a-boo. Peek-a-boo, peek-a-boo.' And I see my gown going up and down," Deloge said.

19. You've lived in Charlotte County too?
I lived there from 1962-65... just another child of the sixties, horrified and traumatized through the Kennedy assasination, LBJ's escalation of the Vietnam war and student demonstrations in opposition. It was a hick jerkwater town then and you can see there hasn't been a great deal of improvement since.

5. well if you've seen the movie "kill bill vol. 1", ...
... then you know it could have been worse....

in all seriousness, this is ridiculous and it's astounding that there are hospital workers who don't know better.
what's even more amazing is that there are hospital workers who don't stop to think that sleeping people occassionally wake up....

6. Bizarre.
But as in life, you run across all kinds--even in the hospital settings.
We had a neurosurgeon once who, as part of his neuro check on unconscious patients, did what he called a TTT (terrible titty twist or terrible testicle twist--depending on the sex of the patient).
His rationale was that if someone was faking a seizure or other neurologic complaint (it does happen), that they wouldn't be expecting this as a routine neuro check and couldn't plan for it.
Of course this was no more acceptable than the peekaboo, and the hospital did pay for this barbaric test after a female patient awoke from a coma and couldn't figure out why her breasts were covered in bruises when her injuries were not in that area.

12. That jerk is a sex offender
I don't care if he walks on water as a surgeon, he should lose his medical license for using practicing medicine as a cover for his sexual deviancy.

13. He was a creep
AND he was censured.
The deviancy--to me--was transparent when he could have readily twisted men's nipples as well but chose to twist the testicles.
We reported it and reported it to no avail. Nobody would listen to us.
Nothing happened until a patient reported it which is usually the case.

14. Absolutely. Just as a dentist would be if he lifted a patient's skirt.
It seems the "safeguard" of having a same-sex third person present no longer matters. :grr:

16. You will find that only applies when you are dealing with
conscious patients.
In all my years, other than the titty twister, I have worked with one nurse that was accused of sexual misconduct with a patient.
Nothing that I witnessed nor had first hand knowledge of, but knowing the guy, I believed every word the patient reported.
He was a pig and it was not a far reach into ones imagination that if he would speak to his fellow colleagues the way he did, that he wouldn't "inappropriately auscultate" a patient.

17. Well, it's not about listening or diagnosis.
It's about unconsenting public display (and ridicule) of someone's genitals. If a person does it themselves (consenting), it's called flashing or public obscenity. Taking advantage of a drugged patient makes it felonious, imho. (IANAL)

7. The sheriff thinks no laws were broken?
Maybe someone should peer over the bathroom stall at the sheriff and say "peek a boo". Maybe he would understand then about a reasonable expectation of privacy.

11. That's not a 'prank' ... that's sexual assault! It's felonious.
What's the difference between a date-rape drug and the drugs used in hospitals? What's the difference between an anesthetized person and a drunken coed? That no criminal charges were filed is abominable.

"a hospital worker lifted his gown and mocked him"

Peek-a-boo was the farthest thing from my mind.
