Posts that insult transgendered people are no longer acceptable at DU.
Edited on Thu Apr-13-06 04:22 PM by 94114_San_Francisco
I have decided to take a stand against the shameful anti-trans sentiment in the Ann Coulter threads at DU. Honestly, can't you people deride a jingoistic xenophobe without talking about a penis, hands, adam's apple, fingers, birth certificates, bathrooms, or a vagina?

And calling people an "It" is beyond contempt - :banghead:.

DU, you need to evolve on this issue - preferably today.

1. I agree.
She's not evil because she might be transgendered. She's evil because she just is and has chosen to be.

I understand the need some people have to dehumanize Ann (not that that's commendable either) but to do it at the expense of our own allies seems at the very least, ignorant. :hi:

66. I think it is used because it riles the right not to attack people here...
It's just like when I was going to the Dem hq to work for Kerry I joked that it was a meeting of the Socialist Workers Party.

Using their prejudices against them does not diminish anyone of any gender or sexual preference.

Let's make it about beating up on the right wingers.

I'm always appalled at the way supposed liberals and progressives will resort to the same kind of name calling we deplore when the right-wingers engage in it.

Here it is people...if the best you can do when you disagree with someone is desparage their gender, race, religion, physical appearance, etc...then you really don't have anything useful to say and should probably refrain from commenting.

Her mean and evil soul is what makes her truly ugly on the inside and thus also ugly on the outside.

She could be an fairly attractive woman if she wasn;t so damned skinny and mean.

41. You Miss The Point, Sir
Such accusations against this person can only gain weight of insult, as they are clearly intended to be, if there is a pre-existing belief that there is something wrong with a trans-gendered condition. Thus the whole line of attack is, at bottom, an appeal to prejudice, albeit generally an unexamined or even unconcious one. There are a great many good reasons to despise this person, and this is one that could certainly be done without.

59. Again, Sir, You Miss The Point
Starting with the "Mann Coulter" formulation, and prceeding routinely into greater and greater detail, including periodic posting of links to sites claiming to connect her to an old drag performer, such claims are routine here, and appear whenever her name surfaces. The entire line of attack has no point at all unless it is taken for granted there is something wrong with a transgendered condition; without such a root belief, the thing would be no more of an insult than would saying she was tall be. To use the claim someone is transgendered as an insult is to set up being transgendered as a condition it is proper to insult, and thus validates insult and contempt directed towards persons genuinely afflicted with the condition.

86. PC Gone Amok is another name for
intentional offensiveness.

Someone once said to me that he couldn't please everyone when I told him about a phrase that never fails to piss me off. I told him that he has choices to make. You can't please everyone. But you can choose who you do want to offend.

When you choose to be offensive by using the term "Ann the Man" or terms like it, it says a lot about who you think it's acceptable to offend.

For me, transexuals are not fair game for offending.

116. I stand by my previous statement
Ann Coulter is a hateful excuse for a human being. That is no reason to stoop to her level. When you equate a group, any group, to negative traits, making insults out of them, you are making a statement about the group you choose to use as an insult. That statement is that it's acceptable to use them as the basis for insult, that there is something very wrong with the group you're using as an insult.

Another example I see all the time: "So and so meeds to grow some balls." Oh? Half of all humans don't come with balls and it doesn't affect courage and the ability to stand up for themselves at all. Equating "no balls" with "cowardice" is an implication that all people without balls are cowards. It also implies that it's acceptable to use "woman" as an insult. It goes back to the old childish standby I grew up with and am trying to eradicate: "You throw like a girl!" which is even used to insult people who throw like girls because they ARE girls. My response is always this: Of course I throw like a girl. I hit what I aim at.

125. See, there's that misdirected anger and, yes, ignorance.
"grow some balls" does not equate women with cowardice (or eunuchs if any exist today).

It's synonymous with having guts. If I said Hillary showed some balls by renouncing the Iraq war, it wouldn't mean I thought she was a man. It would mean I thought she showed courage and strength. Generally, I don't use that phrase. I usually say, "cajones".

OMG! I just insulted Hispanic women!!! AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

I don't see anyone here. I don't know or care if anyone is transgendered or not, and until you brought it up and threw it in my face, I never gave it a second thought!

But now you're telling us in what context we can apply WORDS?

You're going too far. You are seeing a problem where none exists. People here hate Ann Coulter, and as with anyone else, we poke fun at her in the most obvious ways. But that doesn't mean people are "transphobic." Perhaps a bit childish at worst, but there is no crime in that!

you can excuse bigotry any way you wish to, but words do have power. and you can choose to be sexist/racist/homophobic or transphobic depending on how you say things...

its why normal people dont use the word nigger

there are inappropriate use of some words...and to deny that is just stupid.

With a son in Iraq, dogday, I imagine just about anything seems trivial to you.

I've thought about you and your son all morning... jeez. People don't know what being put upon is. I'd rather be raked over any manner of coals, be insulted in any manner, than you be in your spot. 48. There's a long, long list
Here's The List:
  • Fat people (this is ubiquitous)

  • Prison rape (man-on-man)

  • Christians (progressive or not, no distinction is made)

  • New Agers (you would think they're all killers and thugs)

  • The word "Lame" as an insult (it sounds dumb even when kids use it)

  • Southerners (give it a rest already!)

  • Men, as a gender (almost all of us oppose sexism -- really)

  • People who eat meat (I'm still astounded by this one)

  • Frequent "Pedo Frenzies" incl. unsupported accusations of pedophilia (just plain sick)
I know I forgot several, so feel free to add to them. And, certainly, there are the complementary complaints. Frequently, both sets of complaints are valid.

Now, I understand the difference between Politically Correct speech and a good, scathing insult. Sometimes, the mud splatters a bit, but most people understand it, and often have a good laugh, too. The problem is that some of these "categories" are used as terms of abuse every single fricken day. I agree, we've got to exercise a little artistic discretion, if for no other reason that it makes our most outlandish insults weak and ineffective.

--p!
Pigwidgeon (n): A person of little or no importance. From Latin, pecunius, a coin (or other unit) of small value, often used for counting household expenses.
Recently appropriated as an intellectual property by author J.K. Rowling, several years after the DUer Pigwidgeon originally adopted the name (on a defunct Improv site).

I wouldn't intentionally or I hope even negligently post anything here to hurt anyone's feelings but I hope the forum doesn't get reduce to "Bush is a dick" posts.

Edited on Thu Apr-13-06 05:01 PM by hlthe2b
Heterosexual women referred to as "breeders." Not to mention some of the horrible comments about the black woman who has reported rape at the hands of Duke athletes.... While we do not yet know the veracity of her claims, assuming she was NOT raped because she was a stripper only underscores the usual insinuation that women were "asking for it."

Similarly, I've seen the most nasty things posted about "fat people," "religious people" (and yes ALL religion lumped with the RW fundie nuts), not to mention those who think it appropriate to post Fred Phelp's extreme hate speech against gays in thread subject lines (without quotes), just to be "provocative!"

I think there are many issues that should elicit a bit more sensitive attitude than what we sometimes see on this-- the hallmark of progressive forums. 94114_San_Francisco, I agree with you. You will undoubtedly be accused of being the PC patrol. Goes with the territory, I guess.

51. I'm half with you
The other half wants to scream... get a grip. Sorry if that offends. I guess I was just raised differently.

My first real job was working for a gay couple, in their home, in Long Beach, CA. Because of that job and living in Long Beach, I've met every kind of human being imaginable. I've partied with them, worked beside them, had them babysit my kids... gave waxing and plucking advice... you name it. Not long ago a transgendered work-neighbor, upon hearing me say something about Bill O'Lielly, asked me if I'd ever seen Ann Coulter... and, with a twinkle in her eye and a giggle in her voice, she asked if I noticed the Adam's apple and asked if I thought she is or once was a man. We giggled like school girls... together... ???

I guess because I was raised knowing and loving people without prejudice, my perspective is different than most. I feel the same way about gay and lesbian issues as I do about racial issues... there's just too much division on both sides. Until we stop pointing out the differences as if there were something wrong with differences... as long as we keep putting labels on ourselves and each other, we will never all come together. That is wrong. I hate it. When my kids went to school and I had to fill out those cards telling them what race we were... I flat refused. Teachers and Principals hated seeing me... hated having to call me for more information... I just don't like pigeon holes and I refuse to crawl in one or put my kids in one or put my friends in one.

I refuse to think in terms of gay, transgendered, bi, lesbian, black, white, brown... I flat refuse.

We can't go on like this. We are all human beings and one is no different than the other, not better, not different!

Sorry... rant off...

A lot of these "jokes" come off as sounding like what I would expect from a bunch of people who do NOT not know and/or consider the sensibilities of the people (as a group) whom are they insulting (if they just insulted Coulter - it would one thing). And since offense seems to be synonymous with humor these days - a lot of people seem to need reminding that it's not funny for everybody.

60. PC run amok
and I suppose Stephanie Miller is anti-trans, as she comments on the presense of an Adams apple and probable penis on Ann Coulter on a daily basis-- and I mean, daily basis. It is a running joke, and not meant to slander actual, real transgender people. Coulter does have a protroding Adams apple, deep voice and large hands... how do you know she is not transgender? The joke is that she is a hateful, narrow-minded nasty harpy, and would be the most vocally disapproving of this kind of individual. That is the JOKE. That Coulter herself is what she would scorn most. Not what I, or Staphanie Miller, or anyone else would scorn most. That is the JOKE.

Free speech may offend, but in this case was not meant to. As the creator of the 'Coulter-with-penis' photoshop, I am sorry if your feelings or anyone else's were hurt. But really, I thnk a kneejerk assumption that transgender folks are being mocked and not Coulter, is an over reaction.

Assholes, well. I love mankind and it's got it's share of assholes. I still love assholes in some species-centric sort of way, I guess. An asshole that's human is better, say, than an asshole hyena. And beleive me, hyenas are assholes, every one.

126. Screw All the DU transgender haters
For a group of people that likes to portray themselves as put upon, disrespected, hated and every other vile thing that you think the Republicans say about the Democrats, you folks are NO BETTER and spout the same vile, hateful, crap messages to those who you think you can make fun of.

It doesn't matter if Ann Coulter is male, female, or some other mixture. People are born that way - get over it and stop making personal attacks because of what you perceive a person is. As far as I'm concerned, you're pretty much just as ignorant as those you make fun of.

If Ann Coulter is transgender (which I really doubt), at least she had the knowledge to recognize and work towards resolving her personal issue. If she's AIS, that's a biological "throw of the dice" that she had absolutely no control over. If she's a true XX female, she got a set of genes that certainly don't do much to improve her appearance. I guess every fat / disabled / person with genetic disabilities / deaf / dumb / blind / cleft lip individual is open to scorn on this board.

I'm transgendered. I know other transgendered people from all over the world. It's a shame that folks who profess to be better than the Republicans are, in actually, just as bigoted as those they despise.

Since you people seemingly can't look at evidence with a rational mine, listen up.

At least three lines of that voter registration form weren't filled out. Putting gender down at the bottom of the form, far away from where it's normally located (like next to birth date), just shows that whomever created that form was just as screwed up as the folks who created the butterfly ballot in Miami. Personally, I'd think it's reasonable that she got distracted when filling out the form and didn't notice the omissions.

We are more magnificent than that. We don't need to denigrate any population in order to make our points. The woman is a horrible human being, who has acted and spoken in heinous ways; that, alone, is sufficient fodder for our scorn.

I'd like those who recommend that you get a thicker skin to offer up their own sore points. Some volunteers among us could make sure we regularly push pointy sticks into their sore spots. It might be educational for all concerned. I'll volunteer to carry a point stick if someone out there wants to participate.

in his recent blog post.

The anti-war movement is so fractured by other agendas (Vegetarians, animal-rights activists, feminists, etc.) that it's become a joke.

The left needs to FOCUS on what's important. RIGHT NOW, the most important thing is getting this country off the imperialistic path and start focusing on the problems at home (debt, economy, SS, Medicare). If the gov't goes under due to the mounting fiscal woes, it won't matter if you're fat, black, gay, etc. You're all going to be in a soup line or dealing with a foreign occupying army.

94. I never try to insult anyone.
Edited on Thu Apr-13-06 05:13 PM by Ksec
I end up doing so anyway, unintentionally. I find people get offended at things I didnt think possible. The other day there were some complaining about offensive comments towards hillbillies. Hell, Im a hillbilly and I thought nothing of them. Some folks look at things too sensitively. We should know that thats a weakness. If youre vulnerable to some comment then you can be sure someone will take advantage of it . Its better to develop a thick skin . We all get insulted at one thing or another, thats just life.

If Ive offended anyone about anything, let me be the first to apologise.

111. You prove my point.
Its the Cleveland Indians logo . More than half of our team are blacks and hispanics. If you find that offensive then youre Waaaaay to sensitive.

100. Some people need to evolve in their oversensitivity..
for heaven's sake. I'm so fucking sick of PC lately. I'm sorry.. but if Ann Coulter has an Adam's apple, and I poin that out.. that means nothing other than she has an adam's apple. period. Ann Coulter is such a wonderful, kind, sweet, lady. I can see where you'd get your panties (the unisex kind) in a bunch over her.

117. along those lines....
one thing I do try to write when I criticize the Falwells, Dobsons, etc. is I call them pseudo-Christians for they surely do not follow the teachings of Jesus.

129. I try to emphasis the hypocrites posing as christians, too.
I don't want to paint all christians as nut jobs, even tho I'm not a christian. Some are very nice positive people.. we point out the hypocrites, the zealouts, and the sellouts.

120. "calling people an "IT"?? whats up with that?
I'm sorry.. but you have personally decided what posts are not acceptable.. which isn't going to fly around here, btw. But.. why can't we call someone an "IT"? Is that insulting to.. what? Furniture? aliens? rocks? Seriously... I just don't see how calling something an "it" is somehow wrong. What's the context of "it" that you object to?

122. I lost my own sensitivity to being called a "faggot" the day I came out.

Words are tools and that is all. The listener *gives* the word whatever power it has over them.

All you are doing is setting up a big, fat target.

136. *****Please let me add "TO ME" to the subject line.*****
A few people here seem to believe I have expressed inappropriate ownership of "DU". If I could edit the subject line it would now read:

Post that insult transgendered people are no longer acceptable at DU (TO ME).

Fer cryin' out loud...

Just to keep things clear - decisions about what's permitted at DU is solely the decision of the Administrators.

We're locking this for that reason.

Thanks for your consideration.
