IRBIL/CAIRO - A high-ranking religious scholar in northern Iraq was shot to death Sunday at a US Army checkpoint, Iraqi authorities said.

Sheikh Mohammed Mosawari, vice chairman of the council of Islamic scholars in the autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq, was shot inside his car in an afternoon incident on the highway between Irbil and Mosul, Irbil Police Chief Farhad Salim told Deutsche Presse- Agentur dpa.

Sheikh Islam Ibrahim of Dohuk, who was riding with Mosawari, was wounded in the incident, and alleged later Sunday that US troops opened fire without making an order for their car to stop. The soldiers opened fire from their military vehicles without warning, the survivor said.
